drivetrain whining

I just bought an evo 8 about 2 weeks ago, and I checked the transfer case fluid, barely anything came out.. So, while i was driving it on the highway I started to hear a high pitched whining, that was dependent upon my speed. When I put it in neutral and coasted at 65, it still continued to make the noise. Am I correct in assuming this would be the transfer case "death whine?"

Probably. Is it obnoxiously loud? Or faint? Faint whining is generally ok. If it's so loud you can't drown it out with music or normal conversation, it's probably an issue.

Check out the wheel bearing as well. Although their more of a deep "howl" kind of sound.

Sound like this? This was a "good condition" used one I bought on the forums. Check out other youtube videos to compare, there are tons.

Most likely is the transfer case, especially because when you drained it, very little oil came out. It must have killed itself because of that.

Depends on what your definition of 'little' is. Per mitsu spec it only holds .6qt.

I'm getting the same noise. Mine is predominate between 55/66 mph. I'm just chalking it up to the tc. It sucks cause I'm now almost done breaking in my clutch.....ggrrr

No.. mine just makes a howl. But it is totaly dependant on my speed... also dont hear that aweful grind/chatter.

Is there anywhere I can order new bearings for it?
