transfer case going bad?

Hey guys I just bought an 04 evo with 72600 miles. Its in good shape besides the whine it makes. It makes a whine when moving. Not loud at low speeds but the higher speed the louder it gets. Eventually it levels off to a certain loudness. The noise on exists when accelerating. When of the gas or deceling the whine completely dissapears. Any thoughts? Thanks guys

as bearings wear the pinion preload and c/wheel to pinion backlash alter causing wear on the gears . replacing bearings with worn gears and you will still get a whine.

Yeah I test drove it before buying it. The guy had his friend along that workes at atlantic motorsports in maryland where all the work was done to the evo. He and the seller both told me the cars had the whine for about two years now. Guy that built it said if you don't mind the whine, its not going to hurt the car. I didn't believe that tho, whitch is why im here. For the price I payed tho I couldn't pass up the deal

But you have an 04 so no ACD?

I have an 05 RS and I can hear every noise the Evo makes. It whines all time but the TC fluid is clean everytime I change it. It only gets a little brownish not silvery.

My suggestion is that if you use this Evo as your daily driver replace the t-case if you have the money. If you can drop the tranny and replace the t-case with your own tools and this takes much of cost out of the job.

I also suggest that you upgrade the front diff while the t-case is out. It will improve handling, reliability, and power delivery.

If you keep driving the t-case till it eventually gives out you might destroy the core and then it will cost more because you will have to buy a new t-case.
