3,000 rpm problem

hey guys, im completely lost on this topic. i was rolling down the street and hit about 3000 rpms in second gear, i stepped on the gas to pass a car and it felt like my intercooler piping came off, if any of you haven't ever felt that its like you car automatically holds back. my car begins to run rich after 3000 rpm and im getting that cel. i checked the wastegate and its still free flowing and reset the computer, and all my i/c piping couplers are still connected, still doing the same, and ideas any one would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

u might have ***

air snorkel syndrome

check the pop rivets on your stock intake box snorkel.

if u dont have a stock intake then disregard.

when ur rivets are out, the snorkel lifts up and gets blocked off on your hood while accelerating.

First off, let me starty by saying I am VERY envious of your Evo. Just want to be clear on that.

As for your problem, can you explain it a little better? Are you saying it holds back in that it doesn't accelerate, or are you saying it is like hitting a brick wall and the car jerks/stutters/chokes?
  1. If it just doesn't accelerate much, and the rpms shoot up, then the clutch is slipping.
  2. If it feels like hitting a brick wall, then an IC pipe might be blowing apart under boost. You can't just "check" your IC pipes. You have to physically inspect them by doing a boost leak test. It's possible that there's a loose connection that only comes apart under boost, so a visual inspection wouldn't find it.
  3. If you are sputtering when hitting peak boost, then you need new plugs (BPR8ES/BR8ES gapped to .026).
PS. Just because I can't help myself, I must tell you how NVous I am of your Tein springs and HKS BOV.

His sig lists an Injen intake.

Also, *** only occurs above 5000rpm, and usually not until 6000rpm. You should take my *** class in order to get your *** facts straight.

i have been ASSified once. but strangely enough mine was an atypical case, i would have the symptoms of this new entity described by you as soon as id start to boost significantly (4k rpm)

Don't mind Clayton, he enjoys talking smack to anyone who has parts he doesn't like. He's such a great conversationalist.

You mentioned "that cel". Are you referring to P0172 System too Rich? There are a multitude of problems that can cause this condition. Bad 02 sensor, boost leak, overly aggressive tune causing knock/timing pull. As mentioned you should check all your piping for pressurized leaks. If you aren't receiving any other codes (assuming I was right about P0172) then it more than likely is a simple problem. If you have the Mitsu CD manual it has extensive troubleshooting steps to eliminate problems but sometimes it doesn't address the obvious.

i appreciate all of your imput on this, what i think to be the problem is one of two things mentioned, the bov, and/ or i/c piping. yes that was the code, yes like a brick wall, no i have a new clutch, no i have an aftermarket intake, and once more i really do thank everyone for their help.
thanks warrtalon for your envy, if it was genuine (highly unlikely)
butr on the more likely sarcasm, you should be

Even though the BOV you have is a terrible choice, I highly doubt it's causing this problem unless it's broken or not installed properly.

I would bet on the IC piping, so start with a boost leak test and be sure to pressurize the system as high as you boost daily (30-32psi).

PS. "Imput" is not a word.

I know that's what you meant. I am just baffled as to how so many people get that word wrong. I wanted to make sure you didn't ever get it wrong again.
