EXEDY TWIN HD barks at me!!!

Hey All,
I got an Exedy twin HD (not carbon) installed at the dealership about 50 miles ago. I've taken it easy so far, but there's a few quirks I'm not sure are normal. Wanted to see what some of you have experienced......

Once the clutch is warmed up real good, it feels much harder to get out of gear.......almost to the point where it feels like I'm pulling it out of gear without the clutch in, but not quite..... The shifter feels much tighter going through the gears than with the stock clutch, and I didn't think the EXEDY should change my shift feel. Is this normal?? My clutch pedal is almost all the way out, so I don't think messing with that anymore will change anything.

Also, starting out in 1st from a stop, I always get a weird grown or chirp. It sounds like an annoying seal at the beach barking!!! Also, it seems to slip a little when making this noise, and not catching right away...which gives some shudder through the car on occasion. So what’s up? Is this normal for a racing clutch or do I need to look into these issues?
Thanks in advance!

*EDIT* - For those with similar problems, I sent my clutch in to Exedy and my problem ended up being improper placement of the intermediate clutch plate which did not allow the flat springs to aid in disengagement. There is a small cutout meant for the flatsprings to sit, and if not placed there, you'll get disengagement problems like I explained above. A word to the wise, don't let Mitsubishi install an aftermarket clutch. Take it to a performance shop, where they know what they're doing. Clutch is fine, but now I have two! If anyone wants it for a grand let me know. It only has a few hundred break-in miles on it. It also has a brand new throw-out bearing on it. http://denver.craigslist.org/pts/504239044.html

I get the little chip/bark or slip once in a while.. it kind of annoys me, but I'm used to it.

As for the gear thing, I'd still wonder if your clutch pedal isn't adjusted properly....... or at worse the dealership used the wrong gear oils etc. Wonder if anyone can chime in.. are you sure the rod is threaded out?... where is the actual clutch engagement point? Near the floor, or near the top of the pedal travel?

When pushing the clutch in to shift gears, it engages within an inch or two.....and when I'm stopped and letting the clutch out, it engages within an inch also.....so it seems like I'm getting all of the clutch range??? When the car is cold, the thing shifts great, but soon as it gets warmed up, that's when the shifts become harder. Currently I have two threads left at the end of the rod.

Having driven several Exedy Twin disk cars and having a Cusco Twin (rebranded exedy) and a Exedy Twin HD I have not experienced the barking your talking about. Also if evertying is adjusted correctly and installed properly (which is really hard to do wrong aside from maybe disks getting put in backwards).

I have a shep transmission build and the car shifts VERY smoothly and it never feels overly tight like I am pulling it out of gear or hard to get into gear.

I would suggest checking the clutch fluid and bleeding it, checking the pedal adjustment as it might be releasing to far up in the pedal travel. What your explaining with the tight feeling seems it might not be disengaging properly. With the clutch engaged and sitting at a stand still on flat ground, if you put it in 1st gear does the car start to move forward? If so your clutch is dragging, and will feel tight and cause premature wear, and tear up the transmission.

Sounds like a fluid issue, I have the same clucth installed by IA Perf in Tucson and the car shifts better than stock, but the Exedy Twins do make noise, I thought it was my rearend, as I have an RS and not much sound deadening but figured out it was the clucth, and I get the shudder occasionally if the revs/slip arent smoooth, like when I change shoes to flip flops and am not used to the feel. If I go to the strip and launch a few times it gets quiet again for a few weeks then makes the light squeel youre describing, I think its probably a light friction material transfer issue unique to that clutch as many have mentinoned the same noise. I have 13000 miles on mine with no problems so far and probably 60 launches, maybe more as well as a track day, with 150 mile just that day, and numerous twisty road trips.

Thanks for the responses so far! It sounds like I shouldn't be having increased tightness when shifting, so it looks like I might have to take it back in and let them know to change the fluid or something.... I hate going back to the dealership, because most of the time they never recognize your problem in the first place, as most of them have never driven an Evo more than a mile around the block!!! I hate trying to get them to fix stuff, but at least it's free.

So far it seems like a lot of you have the odd chirp/slip when starting in 1st gear.

clutch noise

Wicked White,

I am getting the same noise. Does the slip/squealing noise from the clutch get annoyingly loud when your front wheels are not straight (i.e. turned left or right)? For example, when I back out of my garage and come to a complete stop and then I shift into 1st gear, disengage the clutch and apply the gas (gingerly I might add), the clutch squeals and slips momentarily. The sound is actually quite loud and does not sound like a proper running vehicle. Have you experienced this type of noise as well? I have certainly experienced what you are talking about and I am making an appointment with the dealer asap.

Try raising your engagement point. It sounds like this is your problem. It helped me.

A barking or squawking sound during engagement is common for cerametallic materials such as the Exedy twin. I believe there was a thread about a Tilton with this type of noise that includes a sound clip if you want to search for it.

I was going to say the same thing, since I had the same problem with my exedy in the honda, then finally figured out that I installed the second disc incorrectly.
