breakin question

Im too anxious to start pushing the car to its limits. Im picking up my car on Monday, and I was wondering if this would be a good break-in procedure.

Everynight, at 1am, go out on the freeway and drive out of the city for about 60 miles, and drive back. Round trip 120 miles - +

Do this for a week, and I'll have the car at 800+miles

What would of the following do you recommend

1.) keep rev's under 5k during the entire trip and easy on the pedal and not mash the gas pedal

2.) keep rev's under 5k during the entire trip and easy on the pedal and floor it occasionaly on each gear 1-5

3.) keep rev's under 3k during the entire trip and easy on the pedal and not mash the gas pedal

4.) keep rev's under 3k during the entire trip and easy on the pedal and floor it occasionaly on each gear 1-5

Since I am new to turbocharged engines and brand new cars..

Should I give the car a break after driving for 60 miles? Park and let it idle for a certain amount of time and head back?

No problem.

Try to keep it under 3K RPM while on your trip. And don't floor the damn pedal. Just take it nice and easy for the first 500-600 miles. It'll be rewarding in the end.

keeping it under 3000 rpm for that long is just plain rediculous. Just keep it under 4500 for the first 500 miles. U can floor it ocasionally and it doesnt matter how fast u go, as long as u keep it under 4500 rpm. If u pass 4500 rpm its ok, nothing will happen, just dont try to. 4500 rpm in 5th gear will get u about 115 MPH. U dont need to go faster than that. ANd taking it out at 1 am for 120 miles a night is just insane! Just wait for it to break in, its better to break it in over time than drive it a million miles a week right at the start. Jesus just relax it the miles will add up. Mine was at 900 miles when i first took it to the track, i ran 13.5@97mph and nothing went wrong. I raced about 8 times. Just dont redline till u get to atleast 600-800 miles.

Well this wont be my daily driver, as I am so paranoid about parking this thing on the street, lot, mall, movies. I would like to break it in asap so i can have some fun. I bought it for that reason =]

And the reason why I want to drive out of the city and do this at night or morning actually, so I can go through all the gears and not worry about traffic.

So do you think my approach will work okay for proper/good break-in?

Yep I will definitely keep good care of it. Just want to get this break-in period out of the way so I can have some "fun"

Wrong wrong wrong.....The more you ***** foot around with the thing the worst it will be..... multiple throttle openings are far better on break in than a cruise of 120 miles every night at 3000rpm high revs and zero load is the way to go.....minimum spool/boost...lots of downshifts even when they are not needed....the first 20 miles are crucial you give it some revs

I understand what you mean limey. So I guessthis plan is not a good idea. Perhaps I'll cruise it every night on the streets. I hope to rack up the miles asap though =)

The way I did it was a lot of downshifts in the first 20 miles to seat the rings...and I did not take the interstate home but the back roads....the best break in environment is city driving...sorry to say!!!!

I totally agree, when you break in a motor you want to first let the oil temp come up to operating temp. Once the temps are up drive it around on the street, you can drive it on the freeway but your rings will seat better if you don't. It is best for a motor that is breaking in to see alot of RPM changes just don't go to high of an rpm. Also do alot downshifting as stated before. It is the cylinder pressure that seats the rings, the cylinder pressure pushes down on the rings which in turn pushes the rings against the cylinder wall. It is also good to do a few low rpm runs at wide open throttle to create an increased cylinder pressure. Now I know some people here will disagree with me but when we are breaking in a motor for an airplane we bring the oil up to temp and then run it at wide open throttle for about 45mins to an hour or untill we see the oil temps drop. Also when we buddy breaks in his new engines for the race bike he does it at the track and runs it full throttle taching it out evertime and downshifting in every corner and he will swear by it, he claims you gota break it in the way your going to drive it, So will countless other people who build race bikes.

Thanks for the input. I will take it out on the street couple of times a night and run through all the gears, downshifting, decelerate in gear, rpm max at 4500, and average shift at 3k-3.5k. Occasionaly, I will go full trottle in every gear but not to exceed 4500rpm. At what mileage do you guys think it would be safe to start pushing the car and get the turbo in high boost?
