Question for those running aftermarket intake manifolds.

Is it a requirement to use a standalone engine management system with aftermarket manifolds? I'm a newb at this so bear with me. I purchased a Magnus intake manifold recently and was looking forward to having it installed with the rest of my mods, but my mechanic told me that it wouldn't work because the Magnus intake manifold needed an independent management system. He also stated that the throttlebody that I purchased from a member here wouldn't work because it would connect to the MAP sensor on the vehicle. I normally don't question his judgment because the mechanic is very reputable in the city where I live, but I dropped a pretty penny on these parts and I don't want to invest in a standalone management system. Any responses will help.

Not sure the answer to your question, but why not invest in an EMS if you are already spending a pretty penny...just my .02 cents

I would sell it when you look at Buschur trapping 148mph and Dan 146mph on stock intake manifolds P/P speaks for itself. I personally feel like there are gains to be had, but only in maxxed out setups no reason to get something like that for a stock/smallish turbo. Don't forget the TQ loss is there to larger plenum it's the nature of the beast.

When dealing with aftermarket intake manifolds, you have to make provision for the stock MDP/MAP sensor, either with an adapter or finding one with it built in. Eliminating the EGR is where the CEL code comes from. You can disable the tests for it, and make adjustments so the ECU shouldn't throw a code, and the tests show as unsupported, however I have not yet tested to see if its sufficient to allow it to pass an OBD-II inspection.

but it is NOT necessary to run a standalone to do ANY of this stuff. If you are running an aftermarket throttlebody which doesn't have an ISCV stepper motor, then you would have to work around that. However its no problem if you use a ported stock throttlebody.

I'm running the AMS VSR intake manifold. It does not have a provision for EGR (exhaust gas recycle), or the stock MAP sensor. By not having EGR, it will throw a cel. MalibuJack sounds like he may have a work around for that. You can buy an adapter for the stock MAP. I bought one from AMS with the manifold, and I've run with and without the stock MAP conncected. It makes absolutely zero difference that I can tell. I researched this here on evom, and IIRC, the only thing the stock MAP is used for is to tell the EGR when to activate, but since you won't have it with the new manifold, it shouldn't matter.

Bottom line, you don't have to have an independent EMS. Idon't know why a stock throttle body wouldn't bolt up to the Magnus manifold though, it should bolt right up. The MAP sensor is completely independent of the throttle body.

i myself have an hks kansai manifold that i havent installed yet but i dont think theres any need for a standalone. i would get a flash but thats just me. i got my flash from dynoflash. i saw good gains out of it. eliminated some stock issues like speed limiter, rev limiter, fuel cut, etc. all the best of luck with your install.

Thanks for the responses, guys. It's too late on the AEM EMS, though; I just barely saw this thread today and have since bought one (got it relatively cheap @ $1100 brand new). My installer still says that the manifold won't fit, but I think this has more to do with them not knowing HOW to install it than the manifold not being able to fit. I'll ask them why they can't install it, but I have a feeling I'll end up taking this to another place to get it installed.
