Question will the standard ECU self learn based on MAS reading?

hi all,

I am a relative newbie to the turbo world. I bought the GSR EuroSpec EVO 7 last year and thouroughly enjoy it's explosive power, sharp steering and excellent handling characteristics. Having said all that, as with most people, I need more :-)

I'm not an extreme modders in anyway and do not intent to do that to my beloved car. I started with the APEXi Dual Funnel Intake, a TOMEI recirculating BOV (which is excellent, no noise apart from the intake and excellent responce), a GP Sports Titanium cat back systems, an RSR straight pipe (to replace the catlytic, btw the heck with emissions) and an APEXi GT downpipe. A Greedy turbo timers, Blitz PowerID Meter and a DEFI BF boost meter to complete the interior look.

With the exhaust systems in place, my fuel consumption is a bit higher than before (understandable). My question is that am I running richer mixture due to the mods and does the standard ECU compensate the fuel mixture based on the MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor) ?. Will the ECU lean out the mixture ?

Or do I have to get a fuel computer systems and a tuner to make full use of those components. Don't get me wrong, I simply love the powerband now and even my boost is increased to between 1.3 Bar.

A standard O2 sensor has a very limited range of operation and as such the ECU can only compensate so much, based on the information received. A fuel control computer and proper tuning will always yeild more power with mods. The important part is the tuner really. I am guessing since it is a 7, you are not in the US.
You probably have more options as to ECU reflashes and fuel computer for the 7 then are currently available for the 8 USDM.

The O2 sensor does indeed have a very limited sensor range wherein it is accurate but that is only used during closed loop' ie., cruise. It uses this to hit 14.64:1.
During WOT, the MAF is used along with other sensors. While you are flowing more air with your exhaust and whatnot, it has to pull more air past the MAF to do so and thus the computer will compensate. That being said, most cars can be leaned out a bit more than what the factory tunes them to. Given that you have a 7 and it sounds like it doesn't come from your country, you may want to be careful and ensure that you are feeding the car the proper octane before trying to push it further by leaning it out a bit.

Thanks for the great info guys. I am thinking of getting a computer package/tuning/dyno which will be available in Dec when Mr Koyama from JUN itself who makes his routine visit to our country for his master tuning expertise. The package will consist of an HKS F Con V Pro with complete wiring, a JUN fuel & ignition map and tuning on the local AWD dyno / highway tuning. The only thing that i have to purchase separately is a boost controller which i have yet to decide on. I am however not that comfortable in the idea of overboosting my engine with stock internals (at least not just yet). I'd probably settle for the computer upgrade which will give me the most optimum powerband with the current setup of my upgrades. Btw, I am in Brunei (South East Asia). I somehow pity you guys in the US for not getting the more potent version of the EVO's (although EVO 8 has the same powerplant albeit without the ACD and AYC). I wish Mitsubishi would deliver the same exact spec that they enjoy in Japan (J-Spec) to every country.

Btw, to woobos, I bought the TOMEI recirc BOV from our local performance shop. It's about US$107 and it looks like the stock mitsu BOV apart. Great products and it's specially designed for EVO's by TOMEI.

Ah well don't pity us too much. I'd rather have the basic diffs so I can swap them out with standard/strong versions rather than heavy/weaker computer stuff.
You're lucky to get the V Pro. They are very hard to get over here. An EBC can be useful to hold a specific boost level or spool faster. It also gives you adjustability for daily versus sport driving. I'd recommend getting one.
