knock? blown engine? plz help!!!

okay guys, I was driving my evo IX tonight an i was doing some 1st thru 4th gear pulls. Everything seemed fine as I went through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. When I shifted into 4th gear the car made a very strange POP noise...to the point that it actually scared me. It was something that I have never heard before, almost like something hit the car, although it did seem to significantly lower the power of the engine an forced me to decelerate. Well to be sure of the problem, I tried the 1st-4th gear pull again and sure enough all went well an nothing happened. I went a third time to be sure the problem is resolved, when sure enough again the problem reappeared. The exact same POP noise, only as I accelerated in 4th gear. I have NO IDEA what it can be and I am very worried about my precious baby .....the car has 21k miles on it wiith no mods besides full turboback exhaust. Please let me know what this can be...any help is appreciated....thanks in advance.

Definitely this is not knock. but it can be worse than knock.

did the car had Nitrous abuse?
Just enjoy the car and start saving for your engine buildup!?

Either your upper or lower intercooler pipe popped off. It happens all the time to people. Time for t-bolt clamps!

If any of his ic pipes popped off, then the car would stall and wouldn't run at all. Sounce like you overboosted and hit fuel cut. Get your car tuned and find a decent boost management solution and problem solved.

thanks for the replies so far guys....and NO the car did not have ANY nitrous abuse of any sort.... I am just very confused as what it could be, because although it sounds like the IC pipe being popped off, that couldn't be it since the car runs fine with the exception of that 4th gear issue. Please keep em coming, any info is helpful....thanks guys

yeah monitor the gauges and see what happens before during and after if you can. Could just be hitting a fuel cut, the ecu will pull timing if you start to knock and the car will sputter a bit but no POP............you running a MBC??? aftermarket BOV......????

I was thinkin about backfire as well, however the engine seemed to die which would mean it had to be something else, also I was mid rpm range, id say around 5-6k
