Help! Probs with shifter? What is it?!?

alright, here's the story... i went to visit my inlaws for christmas... just got back, my evo has been sitting for about 7 days, and now i'm having extreme problems moving my shifter. It was working perfectly fine before i left and now, it's very very hard to put it in gear.

When i get it into first gear, it starts off so crappy, second is okay, third feels fine, and then it feels like i can't get into fourth gear. 5th seems okay. I also have trouble moving to reverse.

Is it possible for the clutch or shift linkage to be frozen? I live in Connecticut. It has been snowing and pouring freezing rain here. Can that be a contributor to the problem also?

Damn, i'm stuck, and don't have any idea what to do. Any help will be appreciated.

It appears your car didn't want to go to the IN-LAWS either!!

jk. If you did NOTHING different, nor felt anything out of the ordinary prior to the trip, it could just be the weather. Let it warm up and see if it is still there. Leave it in a garage overnight. Keep us posted. How is your driving style? Mods? Clutch mileage?

I would check the shift cable end bushings, where they attach to the transmission linkage, under the hood first. They might be starting to sieze to the pin.

^ you're looking at #10 in the above. Shifter linkage bushing is behind the battery tray by the firewall. Mine seized up before. pb blaster + propane torch is magical.

Thanks very much, i spent about 2 hours trying to get my shiftin right... and i just finally got sick of it and jammed it in the stuck gears, it just sounded like i grinded the clutch a little, and now all is back to normal.

I guess i should've had someone i trusted drive it around for a bit everyday while i was gone on vacation.

I will be working on that number 10 in the diagram this weekend.

This site is awesome! The place to turn to when i need help! Thanks guys.

maybe some condensation in the cables freezing or the bushings at the ends.
