Spool: Evo 9 stock turbo vs FPgreen

I'm a huge fan of the FPgreen turbos, I have seen great results on properly setup Evos with FPgreens on pump gas. The FPgreen has ability to spool great and make good power. All while looking 100% like stock.

I see alot of people asking about the difference in spool between the FPgreen and the stock Evo 9 turbo.

Well, here is a great example between two very well setup Evo 9's. One with stock turbo and one with a FPgreen.

They both have all these mods in common:

1. Ported turbos (One is a stock Evo 9, One is a FPgreen)
2. Ported Exhaust manifolds
3. Titek tubular 02 housings
4. Forced Performance HD wastegate actuators
5. Cosworth Cams
6. Larger throttle bodies
7. GM boost solenoids with Ecu-Controlled boost
8. FMIC's (One has a Perrin, one has a ETS)
9. Open Air filters (both have the same)
10. Nisei lower intercooler pipes
11. Turbo back exhaust (Stock turbo Evo has test pipe, FPgreen has 100 cell cat)

Here are the turbo boost plots between the two, Stock turbo is the dotted line, FPgreen is the solid line, both 3rd gear pulls.

Zoomed into the spool area:

As you can see, both the FPgreen and the stock turbo basically hit 21psi at 33XX RPM, 22.8 psi at approx 34XX RPM, and 24.4psi at approx 37XX-38XX rpm.

and the boost plots zoomed out:

So, with a properly set-up Evo 9, a FPgreen can spool just like a stock turbo!

Great comparison Bryan!
Would you gain quicker spool with a test pipe on the green? Or is the 100cell that good?

do a comparison with race gas. The green will make bigger numbers.

Where am I talking about actual numbers?

This is about spool.

Yes the FPgreen does make better numbers, even on 91, but this is not the thread for that.

Reading comprehension.

if the green turbo setup had a test pipe then it would be a good comparison, but the cat still holds back alot of power, put a test pipe and do the comparison again please.

Again,

THIS THREAD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH POWER. Nor have I even posted any power numbers.

People, read please.

I have that data as well, I will post that as well soon...

Unless people keep talking about power numbers in a boost spool thread...

Razorlab,

Thanks for posting this data, I love reading your posts. I believe I will see
FP Green in my future unless someone else comes out with a turbo that
spools as fast or faster with the same power potential. Thanks for your
contributions to the community.

Razorlab, I'm anxiously awaiting the spool difference on race gas. I'm curious how much of the quick spool we get is due to the race gas. I'd like to think mostly from tuning and some custom porting, but your results will be interesting. Thanks for the comparisons.

Added: After reviewing my old logs from the Cam swapping sessions, your Green results goes along with what I found on Buschur's Dyno.
Posted by me on Jan 27: "With this said, I'll also say that one of the JUN pulls actually put down 513 wtq and 443 whp. HOLD ON TO YOUR PANTS. The 513 wtq is absolutely documented and was made at 3740 RPMS with FULL BOOST at 3600. NO BS." and I observed and logged maximum torque at 3687rpms on one of the pulls.

I've posted the above info for spoolup comparisons NOT for power numbers. The Green showed FULL BOOST at 3600 based on logs.

9sec9, just to make sure others know....when you say FULL BOOST by 3600rpms, you mean ~34psi, correct? 'FULL BOOST' is not a real concrete number for a lot of people

Bryan, that is some awesome test data. Very interesting.

Since I am about to do some of the mods that you have listed as being done on both cars, specifically the ported manifold, tubo hotside and an aftermarket O2 housing, based on your experience, how much do these modifications buy in terms of spool up?
