so i just bought an evo IX works fine...driving on the freeway i was getting into fifth then i heard a grind noise but what questioned me was that i was pushing on the clutch all the way down...might i add this only happens at high RPMs when im off boost no grind sound..what could this be? and when i first start the car in the morning, and get into reverse a loud Clunk noise sounds too...i have no idea whats going on..i did try to search but maybe i was typing in the wrong things to search for..i Need help before this gets any worse...Thanks guys..

I'm not sure what's going on with reverse, but it definitely sounds like you have a classic case of 5th gear grind. My car does the same thing. 5th gear only grinds when I shift out of 4th @ redline. The problem is a bad syncro and it is very common...unfortunately. If you just bought the car, and you still have a warranty, you can TRY to get it fixed but generally they will only cover it if the problem happens under "normal driving conditions". Of course, coming out of 4th gear at 7k rpms isn't considered normal driving.

i have the same thing, and when i put it in reverse 8 out of 10 times theres a real loud clunkkk unless i hold the clutch put it in first then go to reverse its reallly strange.. my 3rd gear also is really notchy and grinds under non-normal driving conditions... tookit to dealer and drove with the tech. he drove and shifted very slow and says that theres nothing wrong with it.. hetried being a hotshot doin 90 on a 55 and putting in the clutch then waitin 2 seconds to 5th and says its as smooth as butter... *******s

Well, I think it would be a waste of time having just the syncro replaced, especially if it's not under warranty. I think there have been people that have had there bad syncros replaced under warranty by the dealer, only to have the issue come back months down the road. I would say that if you plan to keep the car for a while and don't want transmission problems again, send the trans out to Shep or Buschur for a complete rebuild. Chances are it's going to cost you around $1,000 depending on what you want done.

Shep

Buschur

Again, it depends on how long you're keeping the car, what you want to do with the car in the future, and how much money you have to spend. But IMO, having it rebuilt by one of the shops listed above is money well spent.

hey its very simple to see what clutch you have..jack it up and get underneath it..then theres a dust cover that goes over the trans..right by the starter take that off..and look in there with a flashlight you can see what clutch is in it..usually..

also check out
www.dogboxracing.com...if you are around the east coast..alex is great at evo trannys...

Most of the people on the west coast send their transmissions for rebuilds to either TRE or Shep.
