Trouble Removing Oil Filter

I use a mobil1 oil filter. decided to change the oil today but had trouble removing the oil filter. i had one of this hard plastic oil filter wrenches and it worked perfectly the last time i changed the oil, but after a few cranks today, it CRACKED!! Some cheap piece of s***. went to schucks and bought one of those strap wrenches, but enough room to get it to lock and get a good grip.

whats the best way to get that damn filter off?

IIRC, I have to use a strap wrench as well, and I only hand tighten my filter.

Use one of those Oil filter wrenches that looks like Weird looking Channel Locks like this.

Get strong hands j/k...I never use a oil filter wrench on my car...make sure you dont put them on too tight...I only use OEM oil filters.

The one time I hand tightened the oil filter I had a leaker. Since then I have always used a filter wrench when installing and removing the filter. What wrench? - whatever works but I wouldn't recommend plastic tools.

I've read of people losing the filter when underway and people wiring the filter in place because of this problem. The oil pump puts out a lot of pressure, especially when the oil is cold.

I think wiring the filter on is overkill but hand tighten only is not good advice for this engine.

i was in the same situation about a week ago, it wouldn't come off for anything....so I hammered a screwdriver through the oil filter, twisted it while at the same time using a wrench like the one import junky posted to twist it also, and it finally came off. Never again will I tighten it more than with my hand and a 3/4 turn on the wrench. If all else fails, try this method though, it worked for me. Good luck man.

Oh, and make sure you take the seal out if it doesn't come out with the filter so you don't double seal it.

I have done this before on my old cars back when I was a kid....this is from when the filter over tightened. I ususally spin the filter on till it stops them give it one full turn with my hand after that. I can take the filter off with my hand when it comes to an oil change. My hands are pretty freakin strong though.

I always use a filter wrench doing mine as well. I use the kind that looks like a large socket. It has a 3/8" drive hole. As long as you have a good torque wrench you have nothing to worry about. Hand tight for me is not what hand tight for Schwartzenegger is, so torquing is the only for-sure way to know if it's tightened properly. Besides, chances are you usually have some oil on your hands or filter making it even harder to do it hand tight.

What I do is spin it on and tighten as much as I can with one hand, then use both hands on it and crank. Thats usually worth another 1/4-1/2 turn, which is pretty dand good, since when removing it, its hard to do by hand, and usually I have to use a wrench

for those who have a hard time taking their oil filter off, try using K&N oil filters. They have a nut attached on the bottom of the filter so you can use a socket and rachet to take it off....well thought design....and they are on sale at amazon.com

yeah this works great. just finished the oil change. Thanks.

to get the new filter on, i ended up buying another oil filter wrench, but this time, i went to napa and bought theirs with a metal drive insert instead of that crappy full plastic piece of s*** from schucks. thanks for all your help guys.
