Abnormal noise...
Hi all,
I'm getting a deep whining noise at very low speeds (sounds like moaning) on my Evo IX MR, and it's loudest when cold. Once I'm above about 5 MPH (clutch fully depressed) the noise is gone. It's there both backwards and forwards, and seems to be coming from the front of the car.
The noise started a while ago, but now it's gotten more frequent (i.e. it only used to occur when cold, now it occurs all the time, but only at low speeds).
Any ideas? The car is still under warranty of course, but finding the time for the three hundred trips to the useless dealers is difficult..
Thanks in advance for any help!

The noise started about 8 months after getting the car, so it's definitely abnormal... The noise occurs at low speeds only, and happens whether I move off in 1st or 2nd gear (I haven't tried moving off in higher gears as that would not be good for the transmission)... When you say "get going in a higher gear", I assume you mean moving at normal speeds (>50mph)? If so, then it doesn't make any abnormal sounds there. If you mean actually move off from rest in 5th or 6th, I haven't tried, but it's likely to still be there - at least when cold.
Also, I just drove the car and it was making the noise loud and clear when cold... After driving for a while (and everything was warmed up) I tried to replicate the issue again, but it was much harder. The noise was there when just moving off at part clutch.
Thanks!

Sounds like it is the TOB bearing noise. If it only happens while moving the car at low speeds while releasing the clutch that is the most likely cause, this is pretty normal and mine does it every once in a while when the ambient temperature drops.
Thanks for the response, tunit!

If not, as JRB said it's probably your throw out bearing.
Mines been doing it since I bought it over 2 years ago. 1st and 2nd it makes a slight whinning noise. What they are talking about is get on the hwy and do about 70-80mph and put the car in neutral and coast. If you still hear a whine its your tcase.

Okay guys, check this out... Several weeks ago I took the car to Mitsubishi to finally get that noise checked out (it was starting to get pretty loud). They traced it to the transfer case and they kept the car just over a week to get it replaced. When I got the car back, the noise was still there (much quieter though), but the following NEW issues were there:
1) They forgot to secure the main air pipe between the intake manifold and the turbo. After driving gently and everything seemed fine, I floored it and everything still seemed okay. Typical Murphy's law, the first CORNER I floor it in to, the pipe came off and I lost all power!! Fortunately I kept control and was able to limp to a car park. They hadn't even screwed down the jubilee clips at all - on EITHER SIDE!!
2) After about 20 miles, the exhaust started rattling like CRAZY. I thought it was going to come off.
3) The gears were really difficult to engage.
4) The noise it originally went in for was still there, although much quieter.
So, needless to say, I booked it back in again, and they assured me they would fix all the issues. So, this time they kept the car for over TWO WEEKS (they replaced the flywheel and clutch assembly), and I just got it back 30 minutes ago. The good news is that the gears are easier to engage, the noise seems to be gone, and the exhaust is rattling.
The bad news? The car feels like I'm driving a Chevy Cavalier. All the power is GONE! At 3000 RPM the boost is at about 0.1 BAR. At 4000 RPM it's up to 0.3 BAR, by 5000 RPM it's barely at 0.5 BAR. By the time I get to 6000 RPM, I'm barely at 0.8 BAR. Methinks something is wrong...
Now they want me to bring it back again tomorrow to take a look at it... This is ridiculous!
Anyone have any idea what could be causing the boost issues? I checked the visible piping on the divertor valve and intake manifold - I couldn't see the wastegate actuator from my quick look (although if the pipe wasn't on the wastegate actuator, I'd expect an increase in boost as the actuator wouldn't open). They said they reprogrammed the ACD, but I don't know what's involved in that, so I don't know if programming the ACD could be an issue, or if it's a seperate control box. The only thing I did notice was was the ground connection between the inlet manifold and the chassis was not connected (I guess they took it off and forgot to re-attach it).
Comments appreciated...
Thanks!
