rear dif

I own a 2006 silver evo 9. I bought about to weeks ago with about 8300 miles on it. I took my car up to the mitsubishi dealership to get the rear dif fluid changed out today. They told me that there were metal shavings in the fluid they drained. I know that is caused from launching the car. I haven't launched the car myself so this had to be done by the previous owner. I guess my question is does this mean I'm going to have to start looking for a new rear dif?

you are almost aways going to find metal shavings on the plug when you change any fluids involving the transmission. Trans, and diffs especially. Even if the car was never launched, you will likely find shavings attached to that magnetic drain bolt. its the big chunks that you want to avoid. i had actual peices of gear come out attatched to the bolt on a wrx trans I was working on. now that wasnt good

Its normal. You will know when your rear diff is about to go out. TRE sells a upgrade for stock diff's for cheap.

If you want to be ultra paranoid, take the diff out and send it to TRE for the $400 upgrade ... Jon will check it out while it's there and you will not only have peace of mind, but a lot better handling car. One of the best mods I've done on my car to date.
