Possibly you killed some of your spark plugs, so swap that for a start. And running meth, afr at 9.9? Why did you put 91 oct in there?

Thanks for the reply .... Yeah, it runs 9.9-10.2 AFR under WOT most often.

I am in Canada, and the highest availiable on the East Coast is ****ty 91 Octane. Until I do some pulls and have it re-tuned for 91 from TTP, I have been adding 16 points of octane ... so 2-3 full octane points to the fuel.

I'm going to give plugs a shot tomorrow morning. What are the stock Evo 9 plugs? Does anyone have the "spark plug number" for lack of better terms so I can try to find a set locally tomorrow. I'd imagine they are NGK? Could this be causing the slight top end knock that I'm hearing, if the plugs are fried?

Thanks.

ZB.

Def sounds like a meth line is not providing the full amount the engine is asking for. It sounds like a hose or a connection is loose.

Check those. That def sounds like what it could be. Hopefully it's something simple like that.

Yeah, I did find the leak in the line ... That is an easy fix. The major issue is getting the car running properly again after the failure which I'm sure caused the engine to indulge itself in a bit of knock and maybe a blown plug or two

Could be much more major as well ... any idea what I could have screwed up otherwise? Things to check?

Still looking for the specific plugs I need to buy ... anyone? 06' Evo IX

pull the plugs, check the oil level, maybe rod knock.

if you pull one of the spark plugs out it should have make and model number on it. If you didnt have any issues with those plugs buy the same ones

I'm at work, and will do this as soon as I get home. Thanks for your help. What is the best way you can describe rod knock? The noise I have sounds like it's coming from the head, but I could be very wrong. What are the chances of Rod Knock at 30,000 miles with a well taken care of engine, that hit fuel cut due to a poor mixture and possible detonation? Best place to source parts if this is the issue? Upgrades worth the money while I'm in there?

Didn't even think of it. They are stock NGK Evo IX plugs, so they should read on the side of the plug ... Great!! Thanks.

when I spun a bearing it sounded like it was coming from the head. however a spun bearing is usually caused by low oil so check yours.

The knock noise sounded like there was something rattling in the head and got louder when i revved the motor

From experience the evo 8 plugs wont fit so if you have to force anything in to place stop what your doing and make sure they are for the IX. I recently put NGK Iridium IX in my 06 evo. The numbers on the side of the box is LFR7AIX and the stock number is 2309. Hope that clearified the spark plug question for ya.

Fantastic, thank you! So that is the stock plug, but in Iridium? Same burning characteristics?

As far as i know the stock ones are Iridium (please anyone correct me if im wrong) I have the stock ones righ here with me and it says IR right underneath NGK on the plug. You asked what the part number was on the side of the plug and the stock ones are ILFR7H. Hopefully this saves you the hassle of taking the stock ones out cause its a pain in the ***. Twist it as you pulling out the boot my buddy ripped his and that was a pain in the ***. im no spark plug expert but in the DSPORT magazine they break down the Iridium plugs (july 2008 #67A page 42) as having a melting point of 4449*F, strength 159 Kpsi, Electrical Resistance 2.09and hardness 240 whatever that means...

1. tuned for 9.9 a/f? wow...what a waste of fuel. I'm sure there is some *good* reason for a tune at 10 a/f w/ meth.
2. What mix of meth were you running?
3. Why didn't your failsafe cut boost to wategate pressure?
4. Why haven't you taken advantage of the JackofTrade harness + Tephra map switching patch
5. Check plugs like recommended
6. TTP went to canada to tune and install?

Hey ... To answer some of your questions! I just purchased the car from a guy in Jacksonville Florida. The Bumper regulations regarding importation of a long list of cars was lifted by the Canadian Government 2 weeks ago, so chances are I have one of the first Evo's in Canada. They have never been sold here before. The car was purchased as a modified car, and was tuned and on the dyno in Florida before purchase. The car was brought to TTP and tuned exactly as it sits now by TTP.

1. Again, the car was tuned like this when purchased.

2. Pure Meth from VP.

3. It did, that's what made me lift out of it ... It didn't just "beep" and change maps though, it hit fuel cut so hard my head almost hit the wheel LOL ... Just by luck I was by an exit, and pulled into a gas station parkinglot to shut off the car to go back to the prefered map. That's when I noticed the car missing etc. The Meth leak was found after I drove it home slowly and parked it in the garage.

4. It instantly changed to a new map, possibly to the 3rd/4th causing a limp mode of some sort??? Could have something to do with the miss. Replacing plugs before I fire it back up to see.

5. Doing plugs in the morning

6. Car was tuned when it was in Florida ... before I drove it 1980 miles back home to Nova Scotia, Canada.

..... Hopefully that answers some questions ... any more input now? I mean that in the most honest way possible ... The entire Evolution thing is new to me. I'm a car nut and have been for years, but the Evo certainly has a learning curve.

Cheers,
ZB.
