first gear whine, any ideas?

hello there.

i have a jdm evo 9 mr rs, which comes with the 5 spd close ratio transmission.

the car is about a year old and has the basic mods.. (intake, exhaust, ecu, cams)

i recently put in a new ogura twin plate clutch and went to the drag strip after running it in for a week.

i launched the car about 3 times that night at the stock LC of 5500rpm..

after that one the way home i noticed when i engaged first gear, on the move there would be a whining sound, something light ppg straight cut gears but slightly softer.

this happens only in first gear and has never happened before.

any idea what might be wrong? thank you!

Likely just first gear...if it gets louder in the coming days and weeks, you just bought yourself a new transfer case..

did you have any wheel hop (car fighting for traction accompanied by mild to severe juddering?)
if you did, then it is not uncommon for you too have tweaked a gear, or the tranmission output shaft alignment and bearings. sometimes replacing the roller taper bearings that sit on either end of the output shaft may fix this. are any of your gears now tight?

you should give john at http://sheptrans.com a call as he deals with this all the time and is a really helpful guy.

Just like he said. Mine has been that way for a year now. Happened after a bad launch. Mine hasn't gotten any worse.

that's what i thought.

i thought the jdm mr rs 5 spd gearboxes were bullet proof.

looks like i might be wrong..

yes there was juddering. think i might pull out the transmission for a check/rebuild..

i'd go t sheptrans but i'm 129417509173052972395 miles away.

thank you all!

Thats pretty odd my car has always whined just a little bit in 1st and 2nd gear but only at really low speeds like up to 3k rpm then it will stop all together. If your car will whine through the rpm range but only in 1st gear it seems like you may have bent/chipped a tooth on the gear set.

Transfer case noises are transmission independent so you should be able to put the clutch in and make it go away.

So if I'm reading you right, if there's a noise..and you press the clutch in and it stops, it's the transmission making the noise? And if it doesn't stop, it's the transfer case?

Yea I've seen a good number of those videos, but that's one important bit of information they neglected to mention

just gear wear, nothing to lose sleep about unless it is really loud.

so i conclude it's probably just a chipped/bent tooth on the 1st gear gearset.

is this something i should get fixed asap or wait until it gets really bad?

tracking should still be ok since i don't use 1st gear on the track yes? spent too much on the car these couple of months. probably want to wait a while before dumping more cash into it!

Your going to blow up the transfer case or the synchro's before you blow up 1st gear. Cases where gears blow apart are pretty rare in a 5 speed.
