Do your clutch chatters in the morning?

Recently I have been getting clutch chattering in the morning. I had the same thing in my WRX which was a contributor to the buzzing noise coming from the tranny area.

And I do have the clutch buzzing noise.

I sometimes get clutch chatter. But I have found that if I give it a few more revs, I don't get the chatter.

I get it too. It has only started the last two months, right after the dealer had it taken on a 100 mile test drive. BUt yeah the first time I drive it on any given day it chatters like hell if you dont slip it up to 2500, once its all warmed up 2000 is fine from a dead stop.

The trannyis comming out next week to see about replacing the throwout bearing and I've asked them to take a look at the cluth, pressure plate, and flywheel as a result of both the decel noise and the chatter. Also had the chatter noted on my last service ticket since I only have 3,000 miles on car.

I have it too, its not uncommon for our clutches to chatter in the morning. Reason being is that from the factory our pressure plates do have quite a bit of clamping force. You will usually only notice the chatter early in the morning or when the car is cool because once the clutch warms up it looses a bit of the clamping force from the heat.

What exactly is clutch "chatter"? I noticed my revs are low whent he car is cold, and I do hear some noises from the tranny, but I just figured it was because the car was cold.

Like when you are cold your teeth chatter. The car will shake/jerk in a pulsing manner. The pressure plate is trying to engage but it is slipping whenever it get some grip then grip again and so on.

Yes I have it. Totally normal for this type of clutch. You should only get a bit of "chatter" - feels like bumpity bump if you very slowly release the clutch - like in the morning when you're supposed to be waiting to warm things up. I've noticed this after a few good clutch slips, which I think broke the thing in nicely because it's a lot more responsive. I do not abuse clutches, I know better. This feeling should go away after 5-10 stop and go's. Don't ride the clutch looking for this behavior though...then you'll screw it up. The subaru clutch really could get burned after a few too agressive launches, I did it while trying to get the damn thing to go into traffic while the ac was on (forgot) - next morning I had chatter...it is NOT like the Evo.

Remember how the manual says to warm up the car before driving it?

Guess what that was for.

My car sits and warms up for 10 full minutes every morning. I never launch the car, never drop the clutch, never ride the clutch. I always speed match in between shifts, always leave it in gear while braking, always have the clutch fully extended before I go WOT with the car. I beat on my car a lot. It has seen well past 7000 rpm on quite a few occasions.

I have no problems with the car. No clutch chatter, no decel buzz, stock clutch (9200 miles).

Hell yeah it chatters in the mornings now or whenever it isn't warmed up. From the other posts on this thread, it seems to be normal.

I have this, but I wouldn't call it chatter. Chatter usually has an associated "chattering" noise with the bumpy clutch engagement. I'd call this clutch "shudder".

It's totally normal for a cold drivetrain. I let my car warm up for a solid 4-6 minutes now that the weather is giving us some cold temps (< 40 degrees). You will notice this more if you live in a colder climate.

If it persists after a few stop-and-gos (i.e. is happening frequently even after miles and miles of driving) you probably have another issue. But if it goes away once the drivetrain warms up (once your shifting becomes a bit easier/smoother) you have no problems to worry about.

hey is talking about the TOB chatter not the car stuttering when you don't give it enough gas....and it isn't a big deal anyway...either of them for that matter
