If the shop is ASE certified then they have to play by the rules like all dealerships.
If its a mom and pops shop then good luck. Most "Tuner Shops" are not ASE certified nor do they have ASE certified mechs and are usually gear heads like us that can either do a good job or a ****ty job, some really don't care as long as the car is drivable when it leaves the shop and if it breaks down the road then good luck to you...

it's not hard, but at the same time it's not easy. It's look easy, but that doesn't mean it is easy. If you mess the timing up, say bye bye to your block.

While doing cams is not a super hard job, there are so many things that can go wrong during the install that can cause catastrophic damage to your motor. Aligning the cams wrong just one tooth will make your car run bad, more teeth off and your bending valves. If the balance shaft belt moves, its going to cause a vibration. Improper torque on the cam caps, sensor cups or cam gears and you have problems down the road. Accidentally drop a bolt in the motor... bad news. Drop something in the timing cover... more bad news. Improper break in lube, bad news. Lifters not bled right and the car wont run right. Evo 9 with MIVEC is a whole new animal. I have seen even seasoned mechanics have issues with cam swaps on a 9. There is a lot that can go wrong.

I am not trying to scare anybody into not doing cams themselves, I am just saying that just passing responsibility of the above issues to a trusted shop is worth a lot more than than the cost of labor.

If you are mechanically inclined and have the proper tools, do the swap yourself. If you would rather have someone experienced with the job do the swap, bring it to a dealer, shop or specialist.

AMS charges less than book time for the job and charges less per hour than the local KIA dealer charges.
