I was in the same boat, but wanted it to flow free enough for my desired power levels. After 6 months of searching I got the Injen full turbo back. It wasn't much louder than the stock exhaust and that is because of the way the muffler is designed... Which, to correlate back to the above, had to be sawed off for a magnaflow on a friend's Evo who was trying to flow too much air for the Injen exhaust after doing some other "free-up" mods that free'd up more airflow.

Nope, that's pretty wrong. It sounds identical at idle and the difference is no t appearent at cruise. Just a little throatier under full throttle but still sounds like a sandblaster.

This is the only exhaust that I didn't hear. The drum looked pretty big but when you run catless with a 3" downpipe, every aftermarket exhaust turns into a race exhaust.

I think project chambered muffler is going to have to be shut down.

I know that they are different cars, but they have the stainless works chambered muffler and judging from the video/audio clip it wont be quiet as I want it to be.

I dont want to waste more money on something thats not guaranteed. I probably spent about 2000.00 and lost half of it on the resale. Thats why I'm going to cut away from this project and just run the stock cat-back.

But it doesnt have spoiler and brembo's paint clear coat problems. Also if I run an intake with out a tune they dont have problems with the maf and idling. No thanks.

If its even 1 decibal louder than a complete stock system when running with a downpipe and straight pipe, then its too loud for my taste.

Long story short I bought from a local an EVO VIII cat-back with EVO IX muffler. I wanted the VIII pipe because it has the o2 bung on the midpipe.

Well I just put it on and WOW stock quiet is back! I'm pretty surprised considering I have a 3" downpipe and a Megan Racing 3" test pipe that keeps developing a leak.

PROS:
I took it around the block and it was very quiet at cruise. I enjoyed the nice sounds of my seat belt creaking and my all season tires howling! Anyone out there that wants quiet this is an option.

CONS:
Stock exhaust is a rusting POS. I felt a little guilty puting a rusting exhaust on my car.

I think I'm going to save up and by myself one of those welders from Sears. I saw a Lincoln MIG welder for 300 dollars. I dont know how to weld but my next goal is to try and find a cheap Jun BL (because it has V band flanges) so I can cut it up and weld myself a chambered muffler. This way it will be similar to the stocker but stainless steel, 3" all the way even inside the muffler, and similar internal design of the stock muffler. Remember I'm not after squeezing every inch of power, but gaining as much as I can with a full 3" while retaining ultimate quietness.

So if any of you guys have a Jun BL exhaust that the muffler is crushed or beat up and want to let go for cheap, PM me.

Until then I'm going to pimp the Stocker.

Glad you tried out the stock cat back. I too will be staying this route. I hope to make 400whp/400wtq with it on stock turbo.

For the rust problem, you can buy high temp spray paint/coating...there are even kinds that you can spray right on rusted areas to arrest the rusting.

I had some 2000*F black paint and when I put my stock exhaust back on (with my e-cutout), I sanded the entire stock exhaust (just a quick hand sanding), cleaned it off, and sprayed the entire cat/cat-back with the paint, including the bolts that tend to get so rusted you can never get them off again.

Seems to be doing well for the past 6 months or so. Just a simple option to keep in mind to deal with the stock exhaust rusting problem.

I am not sure if this is feasable but I used to have a supercharged TC with full exhaust and header. It was very loud and I ended up putting a resonator on it. It quieted things down a lot. Is there room on the Evo to install a resonator?? Just a thought....

Thanks for contributing to the thread. Those are some very nice numbers. Was that with with the stock cams? Also I'm assuming it was a Dyno Jet type dyno?

Resonators are not enough to quiet things down considerably. I've had the RRE exhaust and that thing had like an 18 " resonator on it. But it was the wide body muffler that made that exhaust as quiet as it was. Resonators mostly tone things down a little, its the mufflers that determine the sound dynamic (loudness). And the widebody mufflers are usually more quieter than the round muffler styles.

No, it was a 2000*F paint I found on a website a few years back. I think most of the paints that you can find in auto store are good up to 1600F or so. But, they should work fine.
