Bottom line is all trannies have that so called "center diff". I've upgraded several of those on my FWD cars. Do a search for phantom grip... back in the day they used to be the hot ticket in FWD cars.

When talking about an AWD EVO the center diff is located in the xfer case. The active center diff - ACD - replaced the VCU in the 03/04 xfer case.

We need not argue over naming conventions any longer. Call it what you want I am curious what the problem really is.

Why do you think there is TWO hollow output shafts coming out the tranny that the transfer case connects to?

Like I said, I run a Kaaz center diff in my tranny, and no VCU in the tcase because the Kaaz is a proper LSD versus the stock open center diff.

^ I will agree with you and call it semantics..... no problem.

That diff very well could be the cause of the problem as it helps determine where the power is delivered. I think it would be better to have that be the issue instead of the rear diff.

Not semantics.... below is the center diff and the A arrow is the output shaft for rear wheel power and B is front wheel power. What do you call something that splits power from front to center?

After careful review of your info and mitsubishi wording I will agree with you and admit I am wrong.

The stock center diff and gears live in the tranny.... they work together with the ACD/VCU which sort of functions like the LSD for the front and rear split.

Thank you for educating me today!

No problem. I'd love to hear someone lay out exactly how the VCU or ACD work in conjuction with the diff in the gearbox.
