Air Filter Shootout test

I got my local shop, Modern Automotive Performance (an EvoM board sponsor), to sponsor an air filter shootout test! Basically, I plan to test as many different bolt-on cone-style air filters that I can get my hands on back-to-back to see which one shows the greatest power gain on an AWD DynoJet. I will be logging engine coolant and air intake temps to make sure all filters get a fair chance. I will be using a stock turbo'd Evo, probably one thats closer to stock to avoid any interference from prior tunes.

As of right now these are the filters I have to test:
Buschur (old style)
Vibrant
Apexi
Perrin
K&N
Amsoil

Any other bolt-on air filters that should be tested? I don't want to spend a fortune buying up filters, but if any members/vendors want to donate a filter to be tested (then returned after the test) I'm more than willing to accommodate that.

The results are in!!!

I would love to see you test the ARC Indiction box. Alot of stock turbo guys are running them and for the money I want to see how they stack up, so maybe I can kick myself in the *** afterwards

HAHA probably no ARC induction box. That would probably be too time consuming for this test. I want to stick with options that can easily be swapped on/off in a matter of minutes as the car cools down between runs.

Game on! I think the perrin filter got us thinking about this test, I'm excited to see the results first hand!

are you doing just the filters? or the whole intake set-up?

if your gonna do a test, do all the popular set-ups. that includes the ARC box

Is the car going to be stock or tuned? I hope you can measure the AFR for each run.

A lot of the gains that filters show when dynod could come from their effect on the MAF sensor leading to leaning out the AFR.

Add the Perrin and K&N and you got most of the good ones covered.

I think a lot of companies are rebranding the vibrant filter and putting it in their filter kit, so I'd definitely like to see how it performs. I've seen a bunch of good vendors showing pics of their kits and it looks just like the vibrant filter...nothing wrong with that because it's seems like a decent filter.

I think someone needs to do another particle test also and see which filter traps the most crap.

I think it would be nice if you can test it with the stock intake system first to get a base (which I'm pretty sure you'll be doing), then change out the filter insert to HKS, K&N, Works, etc...

I think a lot of people are running with just the drop in cartridge so it'll be interesting which cartridge makes the most HP.

Then from there you can change to induction box and then to intake systems.

Well it's just a suggestion, but kudos to you for attempting this intake shoot out.

I will be doing just the filters not the whole intakes to eliminate as many variables as possible. Boost and AFR will also be logged and reported. I want to get some hard facts for both myself and others!

I'd love to see how some of the el cheapo filters compare. I've got an autozone special $19.00 cone filter I've been using on my EVO for a while and I swear it makes power.
