+1 glad to see this test being performed.

what MAF adapters do you have and how much dyno time do you have?

i have these new:

a K&N RU-3110 (mini filter 4.5" inlet) for tight spacing

a K&N typhoon intake filter RU-4600/rubber top not CF/much cheaper (just filter/requires larger K&N maf adapter)

cheaper filters w/ 3"-4" inlets/spacer adjustable:

APC (yeah i know 300zx turbo killer lol)

mini and larger cone/both with inverted velocity stack

I'll send them over for free if you want. all are new or have less than 20 miles on them. I have them because I was testing filters out for fitment and not for performance. n/p if you dont need them...

good thread. can't wait.

EDIT: i also have a well used/minorly crushed/still good lol ru-4260 w/4.5" popular EVO inlet. let me know. thanks again for this test.

IMHO, +1000 on filtration test:
quite unuseful to know which gives you 5hp more, if you ignore that after 1000 miles your engine will be out of compression for the dirt, and it'll have 20hp less...

Filtration was tested by Bob the Oil Guy and is available on the net via Google. Bob's results were surprising. For example Amsoil filters do not filter any better than K & N IIRC.

Me too, but is there anyone that knows when its power limit ?
I mean that this Apex filter is quite small, compared to bigger/longer lower hp WRC cotton filters...

I have enough dyno-time to test a few extra filters so I'd love it if you sent me some more to test! I'll PM you.

We'll soon find out if the Apexi filter is a restriction on a ~400whp Evo.

I think I will trust what Donaldson came up with on their tests.... If in fact the filter was an AMSOIL EA Series, there is no doubt that it filters better than the K&N as I did oil analysis on my motorcycle to show it.

We tested the K&N Filters a while back and the only way they filter halfway decent is to over oil them which effectively restricts flow.

That is why I said earlier in this thread that Dyno results are only conclusive of HP and have nothing to show how well they filter which is one of the keys in Performance when we are talking street cars.

I already know the results of a K&N and they will never be on anything of mine as I drive things until the wheels fall off. My work van has almost 345,000 very abused miles on it.

Enough for me!! But just in case we are talking about REAL numbers and not Dynolet's... ;-)

Btw, thanks a lot for your job!

The tests will be performed on an AWD DynoJet The car being tested put down 359whp on a Dyno Dynamics on pump gas + alky injection; it has since converted to E85 so I'd imagine its nearing the 400whp mark on a Dyno Dynamics.

Here are a few quick pictures and initial impressions of some of the filters:

Perrin - generic - Amsoil - Vibrant

Perrin: Oiled foam type filter, massive surface area, came drenched in oil so I rubbed some of it off with paper towels, can't see daylight through filter.

generic cone: cotton gauze oiled filter, open top for more filtering area, looks to be very high in quality, can't see much daylight through filter leading me to believe it will filter decently, possible flange leakage as its not molded directly to the filter base.

Amsoil: Dry filter, easy cleaning with only an air compressor, extremely high quality in appearance, the best filtering air filter available according to Amsoil, open top with plastic internal velocity cone, I'm the most impressed with this filter.

Vibrant: Dry filter, good quality, open top for extra surface area, can practically see through the filter so I'm guessing this does nothing but keep bugs and birds out of your turbo.

K&N: The excess black rubber on the filtering media (oiled gauze cotton) really disturbs me, this does nothing but cut into the available surface area for filtering/airflow, is between the Vibrant and the generic filter in terms of light that can be seen through it, based on appearance only the K&N is the worst quality.
