New to the turbo and Evo game
ok hello everybody. I just got my evo in july and i jump deep into modding it. it did have some problem when i got it. It was stock so i could mod it the way i wanted and i knew what was going into it. First thing. It had a bent intercooler and a hole in it. It smelled Bad with exhaust gases and check engine light was on and was told also by dealer that there was hole in manifold and screw sticking out of manifold. Well my dealer down here in lousiana is pretty horrible when it comes to these cars they can sell them but cant work on them lol type deal. So it was up to me to do it all and learn in the process. Now i am a body mech mostly never messed with engine all show lol. So reading this form has helped me a ton with modding and installing all parts myself. in short i have replaced intercooler with aps one. there was no hole in manifold did a water test no bubbles. just took the screw out and put a band new one it because hole was not a hole it was a thread. The exhaust smell was because my cat was basically hanging not bolted up properly and my o2 sensor wires were cut as well not even plugged in. Explained the Cel lol. I replaced my whole exhaust system with a invidia high preformace exhaust with the cat-delete. The wires were all there so i just connected all the o2 wires back up stuck it in the new midepipe and there you go. the downpipe replaced with a perrin downpipe. all this is 3" btw. i did do the fouler fix if anybody is wondering. now the orginal owner was the one that treated my evo like crap because all that was done by him im fixing it. the downpipe had one spring screw and one bolt on. the o2 housing was missing a bolt. i order new spring bolt and basically had the dealer repleace and touque all these bolts back to specs from the manifold down. i had the dealer take off the manifold all way down to because retouqe this stuff. Long story short they did not hook up my turbo properly and i did not gain any boost. They fix this probem the next day by having to rethread my turbo outlet and now i build boost again. They preformed a boost test at that time and found that i was bulding up to 15 psi and then dropping they thought it was because of my lower intercooler reducer. it was the wrong size. damn aps but anyways i order anew reducer from the Uk the right size and replaced this. Now i been talking to Mellon and basically following his chart he made me to get my car to 500 whp. I ordered and installed a forge boost controller and 255 fuel pump. I then bought a sunpro boost gauge and i installed that. I have no ideal how to read the thing but i figure the numbers on the right had side are for the psi. When i punch the car it goes extremely fast and gets to 15psi and hold steady till i let off the gas. What is the factory psi set to. I did not move the boost controller yet its still set at neturel. Because mellon said im not tuned for it yet so dont mess with it just installed. Also since i got the car when i had to drive 22 hours back home it did something werid. in 5th gear sometimes 4th when i am above 60mph the engine feels like it drops off in power and sounds different. Like it goes from sounding like RMMMMMMMM to RUUUUUUUU. sorry for examaple i dont know how else to explain it. NOw i can let my foot off the gas then reapply and then the engine sounds like normal and sometimes it reverts. I dont know what the hell that is. Could it be boost leak or car needing to be tuned. Now if i punch the car it just acclerates and gains speed like its suppose to nothing but when i start to mellow out and cuise it does that.I wanted to give everybody a history of my car first so you can better understand my questions. Keep in mind i dont have a true preforamce shop out here in Louisiana that i trust so i do it all myself i have access to lifts etc not the problem here are my questions. Now this is my first turbo charged car so im understanding and learning more as i go some help or direction would be great thanks

u should be boosting 19 psi stock.
the boost gauge im assuming has the boost psi which is on the right side of the 0 and the other side of the 0 is the vacuum gauge.
the aps lower intercooler pipe should have no affect on your boost pressure. I say they didnt put something back on right.

On a stock evo it will boost at 19 PSI from 0-5000 RPM and taper to 17 PSI near red line.

Check your vacuum lines / blow-off valve and intercooler piping to make sure they are secured correctly.

Great to see another BBY evo making a come back. Mine was in similar shape when I picked it up. Not so much the engine problems, but the body and interior were shot to ****. I bought it from the original owner and it was used as his work car. He mush have drove the damn thing all over.
As for the engine issues. What type of tuning have you done since you have added the new parts? What type of spark plugs/ the plug gap? If they are copper plugs they need to be replaced every 3k-4k.

I dont know never checked him. if so i ll just replace them could that be whats causing the werid engine stuff?? i have not gotten this evo tuned yet im gonna let mellon do it just have to drive 5 hours to get to him but i wanted to put all the bolts on i could before i get him to tune it. intercooler pipe short ram bov and then buy some cams and camshafts and belts then get those installed and then bring it to him. because i dont have any evo tuners around me and he wanted to do it and has been helping me get things right. so sould i just buy another o2 sensor for my midepipe???when i install my injen pipes bov ill do another boost leak test and see if im getting higher than 15 psi least i know what im suppose to get to

ok i got some new spark plugs and you guys were correct. After I installed them the engine problem with the sound and feeling like it was downshifting is completely gone. So im VERY HAPPY ABOUT THAT. Now it drives right. Im am just going to buy another rear o2 sensor and install it to see if that gets rid of my Cel. then ill work on my minor boost leak after i install my injen pipes
???? lol it was my spark plugs not "5th gear synchro/false knock issue that plagues the 8's. Check your CEL, I bet it gives you a p0300 code." its c completely gone the reason my cel is on still is a p0136 error. I have already done the non sparkplug fouler if you look at my pics you will see that. The o2 sensor rear was cut when i got the car again look at my pics. I reattached it and still Cel. So i was thinking why not just replace the damn thing maybe its something with the wires. So lets get anew one in there and go from there. That what i was thinking
What I was talking about has nothing to do with a non fouler. Its a false misfire code that shows up when the 5th gear synchro gets worn. The worn gear causes the shaft to vibrate and the knock sensor picks it up as an engine knock. Your car will feel like it stutters for a second, and if you downshift or lean into it, it goes away. Only happened to me at about 75mph in 5th.
