If it is ONLY ticking at idle, I wouldn't worry about that. Just normal mitsubishi / 4g63 lifter noise.

The "shop" seems to be 90% of people's answers on these forums. While I wouldn't advise an inexperianced person to start doing major work on somthing they arent familiar with, this seems like a simple enough issue, and "shops" often rip you off and often screw stuff up more than they help.

As far as the oil goes, yes, I would use 20W50. If you have been using synthetic, just continue using synthetic, but switch to 20W50. 10W30 is VERY thin, and the oil pumps and bearings on these cars typicaly don't like such a thin oil.

Do a search on "oil pump failures" and "spun rod bearings" and see how many stock cars on thin oil have catastrophic failures.

10w30 is the recommended oil to use from the owners manual.

and to the OP i wouldnt risk driving around til you resolve the issue. The last thing you want is engine failure due to lack of oil. Its probably not a big issue but I just wouldnt take th risk

This kid obviously doesnt know what the hell hes doing so what else is there to resort to? A shop. Theres plenty of reputable shops in his area where he can get the problem fixed. I know plenty of shops around there where he could go, ISP racing for one. Me personally do all my work because i know all tech's out there dont care for my car like i do but not everybody can work on cars.

As far as your oil recommondations goes, i dont know what kind of crack your on but MITSUBISHI recommends 10w30. Some people use 20w50 on a built motor but 10w30 is perfectly fine.

any help would be great.

thanks

Does it make the ticking sound when you first start the car when it's cold, or only when it's warm?

I had a similar problem to what you are describing and never got an answer as well.

The best way I can describe the tick sound, is exactly the sound/tone my car makes about 1-2 seconds after I turn the key to the ACC position...it makes a electronic clicking sound about 5-7 clicks really quick.

However, my tick only would occur when my car was fully warm, never cold. It would speed up with the engine if I revved it slightly as well up to about 2500rpms...

I noticed you something strange you said on page 2 I think, that happened to me too:

I disconnected my battery this past weekend to check my underhood bushings, and since then, it seems as though my "tick" is gone.

Agreed, point taken.

Yes, but MITSUBISHI also dosn't expect you to throw a bigger turbo than factory, spin it to redline regularly, launch it, ect.

Regardless, what is the difference in a built engine vs a stock engine in terms of why or why not it would need a different weight oil? We still use the same pump, same gears, same main and rod bearings. But that oil in either engine is going to get super hot, and super thin.

No man, like I said, I disconnected the battery recently, and it seems the sound is gone? For how long, I don't know. But when I paid really close attention to it today, it didn't make the sound at all and it was fully warmed up....No idea why it went away.

To me the click is more of an "electrical" type sound than like a metal to metal type click.

Yours is gone now too after the battery disconnect?

But it did go away for a bit though after you disconnected the battery, right?

Hum, I hope mine doesn't come back. I'll keep you posted, and please keep us posted on what you find out after your install there...

Goodluck!

Sounds like my problem. My ticking is loud, and then it started to whine and then the car would try and start it turn over, over and over and begin to die, and sometimes does die. Also the oil light would flicker.

Talked to the shop and he said I spun a bearing.
