How is your rear diff mounted? Is it the stock moustache bar with stock bushings? My car has the exact same sound, and it was directly related to installing the AMS moustache bar eliminator kit for the rear diff.

I completely agree...
To go from an evo without it to an evo with it is a big surprise!

I have the AMS kit as well, but this noise was there long before the Moustache Bar.

LOL. Both the transmission + T-case. Like someone said a few posts back, worn ring& pinion. Shep will sell you a nice quiet one or just deal w/ it.

In most cases, are Exedy staged clutches installed in the decel noisy Evos?
Or is it just a coincidence, since they are a popular replacement?

After reviewing a few thread for this issue for a while, I don't see too many owners with other brand clutches complaining.

In most cases ANY Exedy clutch has a lot of "chatter", In my problem the noise happened before the clutch was replaced. I have heard Exedy was able to contract Mitsubishi in making the stock evo clutches, I don't know how true that is. When I compared the two clutches they look identical. Now revvin9k has taken every possibility and replaced the parts and still has the same noise.

My '04 Evo with a Carbonetics clutch and LW flywheel makes the same sound. There are many threads, some of which are from '03 when the Evo first came to the states, that confirmed this noise is normal.. and is exaggerated with an aftermarket clutch and flywheel.

Our cars make noises and I have just learned to live with it.. although it gets old telling every person who asks "what is that god-awful noise" that it's normal. I'm going to change the tranny, x-fer case, and diff oils this week sometime with Redline to see if it helps but I think it's one of those quirks that comes with the natur of the car.

This noise is such a bummer. My car developed the same noise as revvin9k's video after I installed a (terrible) Fidanza 3.2 clutch. I assumed it was the clutches fault but after reading the various accounts on here I imagine it's not.

We all know Evos make noise but wow this noise is annoying. I feel your pain revvin9k. I may return to a stock clutch since the horrible Fidanza clutch failed in under 10,000 miles. It withstood a whole year of mild everyday commuter driving. I mean what did I expect with that sort of abuse!!

I'm kinda surprised there is no definitive answer about it at this point. Lord knows revvin9k dropped some $$ searching.

Hi all, I have an EVO 6.5 with ORC Twin Plate metal clutch and it makes the same noise on decel. I have rebuilt the gearbox but to no avail. Any updates? I feel like getting a stock clutch with stock flywheel just to try if it reduces the noise.

My quest is finally over. My noise is gone.

What I wound up changing chasing this noise down :

Driveshaft bushings = Beatrush

All bushings reaplced= Whiteline

Gas tank shields removed

TRE rear diff

TRE RS transfer case

All bolts removed and re torqued

Exhaust hangers= Kartboy

The noise disappeared after the following were done:

Exedy Twin

2 piece drive shaft

Built Stg 3 Shep trans

I was babying the car for 500 miles to break in the clutch and really couldn't get on it. But I knew there was something VERY strange with the car, and I just could not pin point it.

After my break in and my tune, I let her have it and as I was de accelerating, and it all made sense. NO MORE NOISES!!

I have some noise that I can DIRECTLY relate to the twin, not like the stampede of wild elephants I had before.

So yeah, lots of money later, I'm happy with her.

Big thanks to Mitch, Hugh, & Kunal....... you guys saved my ***.
