By the way what clutch did you have in there before the new Exedy Twin?
Started with the Exedy Single, then went to the Stg 2 organic, now the twin.

I have the same problem here and I already drainned all my fluids and upgraded to redline, no shavings in none of the three so I dont know what the hell it is? What actually fixed the problem for the ones that did get it fixed?

What I wound up changing chasing this noise down :

Driveshaft bushings = Beatrush

All bushings reaplced= Whiteline

Gas tank shields removed

TRE rear diff

TRE RS transfer case

All bolts removed and re torqued

Exhaust hangers= Kartboy

The noise disappeared after the following were done:

Exedy Twin

2 piece drive shaft

Built Stg 3 Shep trans

I was babying the car for 500 miles to break in the clutch and really couldn't get on it. But I knew there was something VERY strange with the car, and I just could not pin point it.

After my break in and my tune, I let her have it and as I was de accelerating, and it all made sense. NO MORE NOISES!!

I have some noise that I can DIRECTLY relate to the twin, not like the stampede of wild elephants I had before.

So yeah, lots of money later, I'm happy with her.

Big thanks to Mitch, Hugh, & Kunal....... you guys saved my ***.

Bringing this back so I can share my experience with this noise. I had the exact same noise as the OP but it sounded more like the first video he posted. A metallic can rattling sound that only happened in gear at 45-75 mph and when completely off the throttle. Especially in 4th and 5th gear. It started out faint and at a lower mph range but ended up as described above in the span of about two years.

After the TC and TM were opened up, it turns out that the Front Diff (inside the TC) and some bearings on the output shaft directly beside the front diff were bad and needed to be replaced. Only those parts were replaced in the TC. The diff was replaced with a used Evo 9 front diff that I bought from a local evom member. The rattle noise and vibration is gone!

A worn clutch disc and TO bearing were also replaced.

I know this is an old post and I'm a fresh newbie here, but I have the same issue.
Car - 92 Evo 1. Deceleration = crazy loud metal grinding noise.

Trans has just come back from fresh rebuild as all gears were pretty chewed up. All gears replaced, snychros etc.
Prior to reinstalling the trans, I replaced the clutch with a Kevlar HD clutch (not paddle), HD pressure plate and machined the stock flywheel.

The car has less than 200kms on since the rebuild but this noise certainly never used to be there prior to the gearbox breakage.

The sound is definitely coming from the TC / Front Diff / Input shaft sorta area....the 5000rpm-2000rpm is spot on as far as the noise and only noticeable in 3rd/4th.

I notice a lot of members have has this issue but different causes...

Given the trans is a fresh rebuild I am reluctant to think anything else need replacing there, but who knows...and my TC never had any issues prior to the trans coming out, but again who knows....

Any advice before I have to drop out my trans for the 2nd time in a couple of weeks?

Cheers!!!

I just got done installing a map short block and new competition ceramic sprung clutch with act lightweight flywheel. And now on decel I have that loud rattle and it only last from 40-35 mph. On stock clutch and flywheel there was no noise and now this??? I can't figure it out. I used the completion TOB. I'm going to be sound some more looking before tearing it all apart. Any advice???

I can't see any of your videos so I made my own

The rattle begins at 0:08 and ends at 0:12 it's only In That Rpm range on deceleration.
It's starting to bug the hell out of me!!! Please help

This just started happening after the clutch and lightweight flywheel Install.

This is the exact description of the same noise that my VIII has at 160k miles. Looks like I need to follow this route... thanks for the post!

I should add that the evo has Shep repaired transmission along with motor mounts and ACT clutch.
Also, new exhaust w/ Kartboy hangers. None of these replacements rid of the noise. It's probably from within TC...

What clutch? Sounds similar to mine running a carbonetics blade single with carbonetics flywheel.
