I'm no expert, but it sounds to me like it is almost definitely an exhaust noise. Try changing out your exhaust (temporarily) with a friend's or something if you can. The noise, IMO, sounds like the exact same noise your exhaust makes on acceleration just with a weird uh... rate of transmission. At least, in the video.

If your exhaust is "bruuuuuuuuuuu" then the decel sounds like "bru bru bru bru bru bru"

woohoo ......finally someone has posted a vid exactly like mine

You can search through my thread(s) about this as i've brought this up to numerous people in the Evo/DSM world and the consensus is that these cars w/ this drivetrain make this exact noise especially on decel.

I've racked my brain about what it could be w/o taking everything apart and having them re-build by Shep, TRE, Jack's , etc.

So far i've put plenty of dyno runs, track launches, and it's gone as quick/fast as the sig below so i'm going to leave it as it is until i really need to upgrade the drivetrain due to failure.

Here's my vid and link for ya........forward to the last minute of the vid to hear the NOISE on DECEL !

I've had the same thing since I got a new clutch, it is normal. My car has made that noise since '04, over 80k miles ago... I bought my car new.

I listened to both vids and you guys need not worry like I said my car has done this 100k easy. It did get alot louder after the clutch and flywheel combo but its always been there.

400+ hp Daily Driven.

Like I said I have never been in an EVO that hasnt done this to some extent. I thought everyone just knew that

Oh and you will here it alot louder in a RS trust me

Try an RS w/ solid motor mounts and a solid hub twin disc clutch lol.

The reason i made the thread was due to the fact that it became extremely loud once the QM went in.

I do not know what to tell you guys.

The noise to me is as barbaric as Ghengis Khan. I don't even know what to tell people when they ask me what it is. I simply cannot believe that it is the exhaust in any way.

The noise feels like an on/off of metal plates at a rapid rate. Hell, that doesn't even make sense.

Being the kind of person that has to get to the bottom of everything, I'm gonna pull the TC and trans and send em to TRE. I'll report back if the noises go away.

I for one simply cannot have that. It really is louder than what the vid is able to show. Having the car gutted does not help either.

That is indeed the same noise that I am chasing. I'll keep you posted on my findings for sure.

this might sound like a crazy idea, because, after all i'm crazy, and it just popped into my head.

Why don't you duct tape a small tape recorder or voice memo recorder or whatever to the bottom of the car with the microphone near TC area and go for a quick spin up the street.

Then move it to the rear diff and do the same and then somewhere along the drive shaft.

Which ever is the loudest is where the noise is coming from.

To me it sounds like something is rubbing. Is your car lowered? Does the sound occur when you push in the clutch on decel? Does the sound occur if you're making a left turn under decel? Right turn under decel? Did you check your fender liners to see if they're wearing?

Do you know what kinda noise a recorder would pick up under there?

The rear diff has already been replaced with a unit from TRE. It's not the rear diff.

Fenders are kosher.

Noise ONLY occurs with the car is in gear, above 3k rpms, and add de acceleration, and you have madness.

I did when I bought the car, and when I changed the clutch from the Hyper Single, said it was normal. If it's normal, at least tell me what causes it.

the point was not to pinpoint the problem through the noise itself but detect the source through the intensity of the noise. Louder is closer to the noise, quieter is further away... again, a crazy idea but possibly helpful.

Any metal on any of the drain plugs?

Being the car is gutted and having an aftermarket clutch just amplifies the sound and vibration into the cabin there is no getting around it.

I am very doubful that a rebuilt/shimmed TC is going to do anything to combat the issue but hey what the hell try getting the tranny and TC built and report back I'd be interested to see as well.

This is no related to your exhaust
This is not related to any rubbing due to lowering

It's the nature of the beast and the drivetrain harmonics being fed back through the cabin.

It's a race car live it and love it
