Bump for an update.

After driving my car to and from the track (2hrs each way) this past Sat and having it get cancelled......it has become more apparant that something is still not right w/ something in the drivetrain.

The noise on decel has become soo loud that even when driving on the freeway my friends can hear the "chainsaw" goin off everytime i let off the gas

I also am noticing that it is beginning to whine even on accel especially at and around 60mph.

I think while the car is hibernating and awaiting the cage i will hopefully pick up a Shep TC.

Now my question is should i go with a stage 1, 2, or 3?

After driving around in another customer's Evo9 w/ a QM twin and a Shep TC i did not notice the god awful noise i'm hearing in my Evo although he does not have the pass/driver motor mounts that i do i really don't think that the noise can be amplified just by the mounts

I'll try and swap out the mounts w/ some stockers before i yank the TC i hope it does the trick but i won't be holding my breath.

OP have you had a chance to send your TC out yet?

No sir. I am currently in re coup mode right now. Wifeys getting pissed w/ all the Evo
spending so I gotta wait a month before I send mine out.

I agree with you, there is something wrong. Please keep me posted if you decide to send yours out. And in regards to what stage, may as well go nuts and go 3 since shes out already.

I would not waste my time with the mounts, it won't be the culprit.

I know how ya feel i'm about to drop some coin on the material for the cage in a week or so and then comes the TC

I'm still wondering if it can also be from the trans

I doubt it but i am wondering if many people have had broken spider gears in the center diff.....i don't hear much about it more of the TC than anything......

Care to share you thoughts on that idea.........i'd hate to r&r the TC and not the trans only to find out it also needs to come out

I plan on doing the TC first if it makes you feel any better.

The trans is not as tricky to pull as the TC. So she'll go after the TC.

can someone explain why some clutches have this nasty decel noise? I know all twin disc's will rattle when disengaged but whats up with the decel harmonics?

Nothing about this whole dilema makes me feel all warm inside

I know all too well about r&ring the trans/tc done it enough times on my car and other customer's cars as well.

Funny thing is that my tc only has 4500 miles on it and the other customer's evo i mentioned w/ the shep tc had only 8000 miles before he had his fixed and now makes no noise at all.

I understand how the harmonics can be affected w/ a solid hub twin disc clutch along with solid motor mounts but what i really would like to know is why mine sounds significatly more obnoxious than any other Evo we've had come through our shop twin disc or not.

Guess i'll soon find out!

Read the whole six pages of posts, and the OP states that it isn't this or that. One of those items he ruled out was the clutch because he replaced an aftermarket...with a more benign AFTERMARKET clutch. Are you sure it isn't the clutch?

Mine started after a trip to the track w/ an ACT HD single in there and has continued since even after throwing in the QM twin.

When i first built the motor it did not make this noise at all only after some wheelhop at the strip..............and ever since then

And like i said the other evo we have in the shop never made the noise mine does and he has the same exact clutch, no motor mounts, but does have a shep tc.

I'm not sure I understand your post.

Are you implying that if I put a stock clutch in, the noise would go away?

I personally don't think this has anything to do with the clutch.

I think in my case specifically it's the vibration harmonics that are transfered through the multiple discs that are exagerated with the solid hub through the splines of the shaft(s) and then troughout the remaining tc>trans>motor>mounts>and then into the chasis of the car.

I'm soo close to just coughing up the $1600 for a shep tc but i'm also pondering if i should just send mine in to let him give it a good once over to maybe save some money but sacrifice the wait time

Update 2/4/09

Hey guys i just wanted to give everyone a heads up as to what it finally was.

I ended up sending the TC to Shep and he tore it down and said that the ring&pinion were worn and needed to be replaced.

Ended up getting the Stage II rebuild w/ new ring/pinion but could not afford the Quaife LSD at this time so i'm sticking with the oem unit.

Well at least i know that my gut instinct was right and now on to getting the car back together to make some passes next month WOOHOO!

Hope this helps anyone else out there that may have the same problems i had....
