what turbo ?? plz help :)

Hey ppls , im just after opinions on what turbo to upgrade to so plz help me

Currently the car has the std sort of bolt ons including
- Full 3" TBE
- CAI
- AVCR
- Crower 272 Cams
- Tune on 23psi

I have researched through here and on other forums turbos such as 3071R , 3076R and several 20G turbos, however theres not a great deal of info in australia on them .

Im looking at doing the next step but not forging the block as yet, however i will be forging it further down the track so please keep that in mind when picking a turbo. The car is still a daily driver so i still need it to be relatively easy to drive but i dont mind if theres a little bit of lag involved but the car NEEDS to be reliable.
I wont be running meth or race gas either and the car is purely a street car.

All opinions would be very much appreciated

Cheers

Chris

Chris, what sort of power levels are you trying to accomplish? 400whp, 500whp? Do you have a budget in mind? So many options, so many opinions! Be more specific and you will get some very good answers here.

the reds are so so expensive here in Australia . You can pick up Garret turbos for $2000 - $2500 but for a green or red its over $4000 . Personally i cant see where the extra $2000 goes and what benefits you can get out of them .

Secondly , there is only one car in Australia that runs a red and the opinions and reviews weren't that crash hot .

As to power levels , i guess as much as possible without causing problems and the longevity of the engine or drivetrain . Around 300kw atw would be awesome . I think thats abit over 400whp ?? :s

Preferably , $12,000 is as much as id like to spend on the car and i think this is possible to spend this and end up with a street monster

i run a atp3076 i enjoy it, i made 385 with a AMS tune @ 26psi.
i love it, im sure theres better turbos that produce more power
being a bit smaller like the green or red with less lag but ive
had no problems so far. but it all depends on what u want to
do with the car with 12 grand you can get a good kit and good
numbers. and im sure you can find a place in the US that will ship
over seas maybe AMS or buschur...im sure somebody will.

Will the internals hate having more than 250kw atw or are they pretty good ?

Like i said ive got cams already and ill put headstuds on as well .
How much power is recommended on the std internals for a daily ??

has anyone got dynos with turbos like a 3071R or the 3076 ?

Do you guys just blindly type in FP Red? I'll bet you guys didn't even read his reply regarding the Red...consider it not an option for where he lives.

To the OP: I can't say I'm familiar with what turbos are available to you in Australia other than the obvious Garrett family, but have you looked into any of the new Borg&Warner line of turbos? The S200 series would be right up your alley and might be a decent bit cheaper than any Garrett GT series with the ability to still be rebuilt in the future. There are more than a few turbo companies out there, best bet is to research what they offer, study the flow charts, and match up one that fits your budget and power goals.

For 400whp I would say the 35R or an equivalent turbo are you best options. You wont need to push the turbo hard to make power, so everything will be more reliable overall compared to getting a smaller turbo and pushing it closer to the limits.
