Brief whine in first gear... what could it be?

Just yesterday I started hearing an odd noise while rolling in first gear.

Here are the facts:
  • 2006 IX, 5-speed, 18000mi
  • At 2300rpm the whining starts, gets louder up to 2500, then dissipates by 2700rpm.
  • The sound is similar to a car driving in reverse.
  • I do not hear it in any other gear.
  • It only makes the noise while I'm moving.

Anyone else experienced this? If yes did you get rid of it? Thanks.

Whine in first and second gears are normal. Even slight T-case whine is normal at lower speeds. If you notice an annoying whine at highway speeds, report back. That means there are issues

Thanks for that info. I was starting to wonder about my car.

I have had this whine for over 4 years. However, I can only hear it when decelerating in first gear.

Mine whines all the time in first gear, really loud, you can hear it outside the car! I've been told that it's normal for the EVO so I don't really mind it that much now, I was sweatin' it pretty bad when it started though!

Sorry to bring up a month old thread but this kind of put me at least. I have the same noise when decelerating at low speeds in first gear but it doesn't do it at highway speeds at all. Put me at ease...at least for the time being.

First gear noise is normal. For the same reasons as the reverse gear noise. It doesn't happen on the highway because you're in higher gears.

It almost sounds like straight cut gears. Highway it hasn't happened yet and I'm hoping it won't for quite a bit. Its an 03 with 35,000 miles.

Does it sound similar to the noise as when your car is in reverse? I hated first gear because of that.
