Camshaft Install Question

I am getting ready to have camshafts installed and have a couple of questions. The car has 72,000 miles and I have the upgrades listed in my signature. I will also be doing head studs at the same time. Camshafts are GSC S1s.

1. Given the mileage on the vehicle will this install cause any problems?

2. Is it a good idea to upgrade springs and retainers at the same time?

3. The timing belt was replaced within the last 10,000 miles, should I have the timing belt replaced again? I have seen timing belt replacement kits that include a new water pump, is that a good idea?

4. Is there anything else I have overlooked?

Thanks for the help.

if u already have the new parts i would go ahead and install them except for the timing belt i would keep that for later since urs only has 10k on it. i would also do the springs and retainers but its not something that u have to do.

Yeah, I'd for go the timing belt for now. But since you are in there and the stock springs/ret have 72k on them...why not swap them out? I'm back tracking at the moment after installing cams, and now going back and doing springs/ret. Do it once and you're done!

why would you replace a timingbelt with only 10k on it????? that just seems silly to me you mightas well replace your spark plugs every time you fill up with gas and do a head gasket everytime you do an oil change.......
The factory water pump i believe is recommended to be changed at the factory 60k service along with the timing belt,,,,
Also unless you plan to rev to 7800 which your 9 turbo wont be making you any more power up there ,,,or if you have larger power plans in the future that would require springs and retainers theres no reason for them...
The gsc's1 cams are known to be a midrange with solid top end so no need to rev high at all ..
The only reason i could think of to possibly change them is if they become weak in a higher mileage car They are a moving part and hopefully someone has experience with this and will chime in.
Make sure you bleed your lifters!!

I guess I was just trying to think preventive since I didn't own the car when the timing belt was changed, this way i can be confident that it was done correctly. I was also thinking that since it is a higher mileage vehicle it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the springs and retainers even though I won't be revving past 7800rpms. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

^ agreed. if you have the extra money, do the timing belt too. springs and retainers are not mandatory, but again, if you got the cash, i would do it. make sure you bleed your lifters during the cam install.

1. Given the mileage on the vehicle will this install cause any problems? check the rocker arms and other moving parts. you should be fine as long as there is no abnormale were on anything.

2. Is it a good idea to upgrade springs and retainers at the same time? it depends on the cams your using and the lift that they have. if there like a hks or smaller cam i would say no. but if there a mid+ to wild i would change them out for better springs EDIT gsc s1 cams you do not need to upgrade your valve train. but it may still be a good idea.

3. The timing belt was replaced within the last 10,000 miles, should I have the timing belt replaced again? I have seen timing belt replacement kits that include a new water pump, is that a good idea? no need to put the new belt on if it was done 10k miles ago UNLESSS the new belt is showing signs of abnormal were. then i would replace it

4. Is there anything else I have overlooked? make sure you trq everything down to factory spec, use assembly lube on everything, check & double check all your work.......

Thanks for the help.

good luck

WHY REPLACE A BELT THAT HAS ONLY 10K ON IT? What's wrong with you people? Skip the timing belt, water pump can hold till 70-90k. Springs retainers, why not. Good luck on the valve cover lol...that thing is gonna take some pulling to get off. I did my cams at 62k and the valve cover was like a single unit with the head. Good luck and take your time.

Do you have a belt tensioner tool to loosen the timing belt. If you dont have one I have one for sell 15 dollars plus shipping which shouldn't be much. It is a miller tools specificly made for the evo 8 and 9...

if your gonna do your springs and retainers, replace the valve stem seals while your in there. at 70k on the engine, i would. replace the valve cover gasket, and camshaft oil seals and anything you accidentally break in the process. good luck. you wouldnt want oil leaking everywhere now would you.
