Dont remove it. I tend to agree with others saying just because people have been doing it doesnt mean you should. Hell if you have a freshly built 2.3 I definately wouldnt run without one.

"I just dropped an *** load of money on my sick 2.3 stroker motor. Now I wont cool my oil..."

SRSLY? C'mon man...I would sack up and run an upgraded one, might as well.

Some will say "Why upgrade it at all? Just run the stock one." Heres what I say. You are running a built 2.3 right? And you built a bullet proof bottom end to drive 65 mph and go get groceries right? Wrong.. you built your motor so you could drive like a raped ape when the mood strikes and redline every gear on the way to burying your speedo needle Like you bury your...nevermind. So the stock unit is made for this? To an extent sure, but on a stock motor running the stock turbo at stock boost. Sure it will take more but thats not its design intent.

Buy an upgraded unit and run it for the peice of mind that you can drive the wheels off your car and you wont have to take your eyes off the road to check oil temps.

That said, I have never seen one professional team (road race) or a qualified shop recommend removing factory designed oil cooling systems from a car...

I think it would be great if you had AMS, Buschur, CBRD, and others chime in ...

Best of luck...
Not to argue, but didn't we have a vendor on page 1 say he does this all the time? And another w/ Buschur Built Evo the same??

I don't have an oil cooler, but I run 20w50 oil. I drove my car from Chicago to Norwalk, Ohio, and to St. Louis in the summer without any issues. If your road racing it you better have one. For drag racing and every now and then romps on an express way it's not an issue as long as you run a thicker oil like 15w50 or 20w50. Don't take it off to save weight or some other not so important reason. I had to take mine off because on the EVO 1 thru 3 you are extremely limited on engine bay real estate. I needed room for my larger intercooler and downpipe.

IM faced with this right now. I just realized that id likely need a new oil cooler of flush out the one i currently have. I don't know how to flush it properly so im wondering if i should just run without one.

Ummmm NO....There is not one qualified professional that would recommend removing the oil cooler from the Evo (especially if a DD or race car)....And YES AMS sells a better than OE oil cooler....

wow missed this thread. anyone called mitsubishi yet to tell them oil coolers are not needed?

only valuable info for this debate would be posting before and after oil temps after removing one. I have only tried to install larger coolers because I live in florida heat. but a customer here years ago removed cooler on his drag car. at steady highway cruise the oil temps rose 40 degrees. from 200 to 240. that was just cruising using 20hp to get down highway.

The guys that are talking about "flushing" the oil cooler. If you had any sort of failure or debris in your oil when you removed the pan, ditch the cooler. Im not saying to run without one but Im saying don't waste your time flushing it. Its way to big of a risk on a freshly built engine to reuse something that is nearly impossible to clean out.

Can't agree more! A friend popped the motor in his 3kgt, we did an expensive build, and he insisted on reusing the old cooler after flushing it. Less than 100 miles later, bearings were toasted.
