Oil cooler delete
Oil cooler delete
Hi
I have seen some information about people deleting the oil cooler.
I understand that if you do road racing or some form of time attack that this wouldnt be a good idea.
But what about normal daily driving and quarter mile runs ?
All information on this appreciated

Op, just take it off and monitor your temps. You could always put a duct to the oil pan where the cooler was. It's still a sill idea.
Also, if you've seen some information on people deleting the oil cooler then why are you asking us?
i dont see what the problem would be daily driving it.i drive in miami traffic like every other day and i havent seen no ill effects.if you were road racing i could understand.you will be just fine.
Well, he lives in Iceland so it must be cold right?

Some BMW motors use an oil cooler thermostat assembly to switch the oil cooler on only if the oil temperature exceeds 100degC. If you find that the oil temperature is always low, then it should not be a problem to remove the oil cooler. In a very cold climate, eliminating the oil cooler may be a good thing. It is important to have the oil reach the proper temperature.

Lucas has been running around without an oil cooler since he built the black car and it doesnt affect it in normal driving and drag racing. Road course stuff might be different but I wouldnt worry about 80% of the rest of the car's life.
Well it doesnt get really hot here and we dont have a road race track so Daily driving and drag racing are the only activities that my car sees.
I have heard about a few cars like a few of the Buschur built cars and now the one Lucas has that have done this.
So there is no other reason to do this than saving a few pounds.
On a side note I was mostly curious because I have seen a few successful cars that this was done on.

I could care less about running my car with or without an oil cooler in NV because I don't live there.
Also...I have some interesting test data of oil temps with and without the cooler. You'd be surprised.

I really don't understand why you would remove it. It weights almost nothing and can only help the engine. The only reason I would remove it would be if I blew the engine up. In that case I would be concerned about debris in the cooler. I wouldn't spend the money to replace if I had to get rid of it.

Our cars have this valve. Its on or near the oil filter housing, IIRC.
You can raise and lower the closing point of them by switching valves.
