Is it normal or should I worry?

I just bought my Evo 33k miles clean as a champ. Heres what I am noticing on my 10hr trip back home I started noticing minor nicks and creeks that usually one doesnt really notice until your ears tune in to it.

Say I am driving at 80mph on 5th gear , just cruising and staying on the speed for a while. I can start to feel/hear (really hard to hear) a semi-whining noise i can even feel it on the gas pedal just a bit.

Like this- dont mind my sound effects

Call the previous owner and ask about this sound. Take it to a mechanic and have him test drive it. Drain all the vital fluids checking for metal particles. Good luck.

My only guess may be the tires if they are somewhat aggressive. When I take my car on the highway, the tires whurr because of the grip. That's all I can think of. Either that or a wheel bearing.

Yeah, that's the other possibilty...a bearing, or noisy tire tread.

The Evo is by far the noisiest car I've ever owned. Mine is an absolute symphony (to me - the wife grits her teeth) of fuel pump, intake, exhaust, diffs & other drivetrain noises. I can't imagine stepping into a used one and trying to figure out what is normal and what is suspicious. It's tough to pull out of that cacophony one sound and track it down. It would help to know what aftermarket parts, if any, it has on it. Good luck.

I couldn't agree with this more. After spending thousands upon thousands on my last build my girlfriend and I were out for the first drive. Lumpy Cosworth Idle, clutch noise, whining diff, partial throttle madness (Between Meth & Diverter valve) ... She asked me "What the hell are we driving in?" hahaha.

Could be a number of things. EJEvo is 100% right ... it could be normal, or your transfer case could be minutes from exploding. (Chances are your fine, but do have it checked.)

Welcome to the world of Evo!

Only mods are the exhaust and filter, everything else is stock.

I am swapping out the wheels tomorrow and I will get back to you guys. I never launched this car or plan to do so I dont see how the diff can go out or do they just fail when they want to like that?LOL

I mean its really something that you just like to know what is vibrating like that for future refrence. Other than that I am good (knocks on wood)

But can you guarantee it hasn't been launched in the previous 33k that wasn't under your command?

I've read tales on here of various drivetrain failures, some under routine use. It's not common, but it can happen.

+1 I've owned two and found that this is probably just normal for the car. If I hadn't ought both new, I might have been more concerned too. GO test drive a new one or try to ride in somebody else's. I think you'll find that it's probably normal, and you'll just have to adjust it with your volume dial.

Yes very true, this car is extremely loud and has alot of sqeeks and creeks. I would suggest you get a ride in another evo to see if that one has the same noises.

Ever driven a turbo before?

Sounds like you're turbo is spooling under acceleration.

+1 the car is just noisy bro. have it checked out but it's probably not gonna be something to worry about. Ha, here's a quick fix.

1. Strip out all of your interior.
2. Drive around like that for a week, hearing everything your car does and every grain of sand or rock that hits your undercarriage.
3. Put everything back in.
4. Enjoy the comparative silence.
