Sand-like particles in Engine Oil?
As I stated in a previous thread, I was having some smoking/burning smell issues with my car. I was using 0w30 SSO Amsoil, and the problems began on a very cold (near zero degrees) night after I had left the car outside for a few hours.
I drained the oil and it looks fine, no coolant leaks, no gasoline inside, just these kind of sand like, salty particles. Feeling them around it seems to dissolve into small grainy pieces.
Is this normal? Does anyone know what this is/know if that's what's been causing my problems? I switched back to Mobil 1 and a Mitsubishi Motors oil filter. I'm not able to comment on the smell, but it did dissipate some and I've yet to drive the car around some more, temp is supposed to hit -35 with windchill, but I will be taking it to Mitsu tomorrow to see if I can run some diagnostic.
Any word on what these particles could be?
UPDATE:: Here are some pics
The oil

The **** in my oil
The **** in my oil
The **** in my oil
The debris was in both the oil pan and the oil filter.
Anything? How did it get there? Bad air filter? Leaking coolant/antifreeze from blown head gasket? None of the above?

dude i've been recently getting a burning smell. My oil was just changed by the dealership though obviously with oem oil. Idk wtf it is but i dont think it is a big deal because it goes away and everything is fine with temps and everything else. It is at cbrd. I didnt tell them so if they smell it im sure they would let me know.

with smoke?
I recently picked this up from another thread:
Thanks for the e-mail. You can get silicon in the oil from anti-freeze, though without any significant potassium or sodium present, we doubt that's the source. If the air filter is clean and there are no problems with the air induction system (like cracks downstream of the air filter), then that's not like the source. Silicon can also come from silicone products like sealers and spray lubricants and these are harmless. Let me know if you have any more questions.
My air filter is dirty.. Now how do I know if it's coolant or the air filter.. Damn

no i didnt have any smoke that im aware of, just a lil burnt smell. I only smelled it a few times when i started it and then i turned the heat on full blast and the smell cleared.
i have perrin
I opened the hood and smelled in the engine bay and smelled nothing, seems to be just coming through the vents

Other source from Blackstone said it could be from the coolant if there is sodium in the road.. which there is...
But does that mean headgasket is busted and it's leaking coolant? or the coolant is just letting silicon in or someting?
Otherwise I really don't know... Prob gonna switch oil filters to something very filtering soon.. Probably amsoil's.
Bump for any responses?
