Bc 280s Cams! Need Answer.
Hi, I'm going to order some Brain Crower 280s cams and I was wondering if I could still run it with my stock valve springs and retainers ect...
Any suggestion?
Any suggestion?
I'm running BC 280's on stock springs/retainers. I love them. Cheap as hell, sound badass, and make power. They suggest their springs/retainers, and I have them waiting to go in. I need to order a valvespring compressor to get them on though.
I rev the SH** out of this thing too. Stock motor and everything, only cams. They, like other 280's, move the real powerband towards higher rpms. It really picks up after 5k.

Don't get the HKS either, they're nice cams but way over priced. For the same price or even less sometimes, you can get MUCH better stuff. Cossworth, GSC, Kelford, FP....don't get HKS
My personal suggestion in this order: GSC S2 (nothing less if you are after max power), Kelford, FP, Cosworth. The HKS dont make as much power and cost 100 bux or more than either of these for a set. The BCs just plain dont work and the springs have a limited lifespan as well. I managed to get 12k out of a set that now valve float above 7k pretty severe (think drop 80whp and you got it). Valvesprings I would go with FPs for 9200 and down, and Kiggly's for 9200 and up.
You'd be downgrading BC272's and HKS 272's will make the same power. The BC 280's will def make more power. My 03 gained 30whp with BC272's and tuning the 280's will give you some more top end.
GSC and Kelfords are certainly inferior but to say BC's are junk is just untrue. They def seem to make more power in an VIII damn good considering they are 1/2 the price of the other two mentioned. Its all in what your ultimate plans are.

Yes, it's more difficult though. You need a valve spring compressor that fits in there- That was the hard part for me. I went all over town, got a few different kinds of "universal" valve spring compressors, and none of them worked. They did not fit. Also, be careful when trying to hold on to the keepers. They will easily get thrown around when you de-compress the spring. A magnet helps with this. Be sure to plug up ALL of the oil passages so that none of them fall through the head.
Here's the how-to:

This is one of the only ones that I've seen that works on the evo:

It's the same one he uses and suggests in the how-to.

Not all 280's are created equal. Do your homework
