what caused this to blow out???

while driving home after work cruizing on the highway around 65mph i go to pass some one and get on it a little bit but not enough to see full boost just held it around 13-15psi and all of a sudden i hear a loud pop. next thing i know i see white smoke coming from everywhere and instantly i shut the car off and coast to a stop. looking under the hood notice coolent everywhere so i tow it so my shop. Finding the source of the problem under the timing cover and also discovering that my timing belt is broke and bend some valves well what i noticed is this plug is missing or blown out why would this happen and what caused this????

sorry for the ****y cell phone picture but its the plug in the middle under the cam gears

Temps where normal? Sounds like the brass plug was not pressed in properly and finally let go.

you probably blew your HG and pressurized the coolant passages, and when the freeze plug popped out it broke your timing belt.

that sucks, im sorry to see that

Don't know where you are located but if there was more water than antifreeze in it and it froze, it could have loosened that plug up and was just on the edge of letting loose.
Otherwise, if your headgasket was fine, it was just bad luck.
