Will an evo ix 5 speed work work with an evo 8's and vice versa? I know 05 - 06 have the acd but didn't know if that had an affect on anything.

Optimal setup is Evo 9 1st gear, Evo 8 3rd and/or 4th gear.

Yep Though a lot of people say its not worth bothering swapping the 3rd gear in the 9 to the 8's.

I just put a Shep IX trans in my 03 VIII, it was a direct bolt in. From Shep's recommendation I had the 3rd and 4th from an VIII installed and the gear spacing is fantastic for keeping the turbo on boost. You notice the improvement especially when shifting from first to second and fourth to fifth. I thought it might require more clutch slip to pull away from a stop with the taller first but to be honest the difference is not really noticeable, fifth is a bit buzzier on the highway for sure but well worth the tradeoff IMO. Shep stuff is highly recommended, car shifts lightning fast and smooth with their internal mods.

The physical workings of the transmissions and bolt patterns are identical. The internals arent however exactly the same (gearing aside). The '03 is a bastard tranny the same as the DSM '90 was. It has a different input shaft than the 04-06 and 1st and 5th are different than the 04-05 VIIIs even though they are the same ratios.

Would you recommend the 04 - 06 tranny's over the 03?

bump im actually curious now. In terms of sending out a Trans for work to like Shep, Tre, Buschur etc, would it matter much if you had a 03 trans as compaired to a 04 trans?

If you send it to Shep he'll go through all of this with I am sure. It doesnt matter as long as 5th gear isnt burnt or damage to 1st. I generally recommend switching to the IX input shaft and higher 1st gear anyway in our Evo tranny builds. #1 better performance and #2 it cures all these problems. The 04+ input shaft is 250 I think for the shaft, but to me it really depends on if you need it or not. Its not any weaker you just cant get parts for it in the 03.

cliffs- 04-06 over an 03
