GL-4 vs. GL-5
GL-4 vs. GL-5
Hi everyone,
I read from another thread that we should not put GL-5 in the gearbox because it contains certain additives which would cause wear to some components (brass syncros?).
I found some Motul racing gearbox oil "Gear 300" that says it is rated for API GL4 AND GL5. What does this mean? Would this contain the "bad" additive?
Thanks!

I believe you should use GL4 in the tranny and GL5 in the T-case and rear-end. Id stick with the factory Diaqueen GL5 in the T-case and rearend, use whatever BG Syncroshift or GM/Penz Syncromesh in the tranny.
Yeah i know but its very dificult for me to get those oils here in my country they have a motul 300 gear oil API GL4/GL5 75w-90 but i dont know if i can use it on the transmision?
in europe they are using the gl5 rating as i put the link above! iam so confuse

GL-4 vs. GL-5
Who won!
Like stated at least 7 times (few actually) here on the M, GL5 gear oil contains sulfur compounds (Smell it!) that, at certain temps and psi, will start to eat away brass.
There is no brass in the diff so go ahead and put it in there, but dont put it in the tranny, allthough It will probable shift smooth before it dissolves the synchronizers
