Hey guys, quick question. Why is my steering wheel shaking quite vigorously under moderate breaking. I am not slamming on the brakes, but pretty much applying a force a little harder than babying the brakes. When I slowly break there is very little movement to none at all, but on the highway when I break from say 70 to 50 there is certainly some shaking going on...I don't know why help!

O and on my front left rim, I am only running four lug nuts on the stocker. The fifth one broke could that be why?

 

Did you just replace your brake pads?

 

If its only when you apply the brakes then your rotors are warped. Only way to get rid of it is to buy new rotors or have your current rotors cut. But cutting them will only fix them temporarily.

 

+1 You need new rotors.

 

Do a search for uneven pad transfer layer. Odds are you don't need new rotors or to cut your rotors.

 

without proper torque on the brake rotors, they can warp under braking...

I would definately get that missing stud replaced, torque the lug nuts to spec, then see if the problem is still there.

If it is, then do what others have suggested and replace the rotor.

 

^ +1 about replacing the stud right away. It's a 10 minute or less job depending on your mechanic skills.

could also be your alignment or wheels being unbalanced.

 

Correct me if i'am wrong, but if it were an alignment issue or unbalanced wheels wouldn't the shaking be constant? Where as he only gets the shaking when he brakes. I haven't looked into uneven pad transfer but i had the same problem a while back. So i cut my rotors and changed my pads just because they needed changing and had no wheel shake what so ever afterwards. And my wheel shake was nasty on the highway.

 

I have this problem with light pedal pressure, however with heavier pedal pressure it does not wobble

 

warped rotors man or even a bad alignment but have some one check your rotors for lateral run out. they will know what it is.

 

post #5 is correct. it's all in the way you brake. when i got my car, the damn thing would shake almost violently when braking. ( i bought it used). if you apply even pressure, let the pads cool, and don't brake 80 to 10mph all the time, you should be able to get rid of the "warpage". after 100 miles of even braking, i haven't had the wobble since. i've even slapped a new set of pads on her. no turning of the rotors at all. from 8k to 47k now. practice braking. good luck.

that is good to hear. did you resurface your rotors or just replaced the pads?

what i did to stop the shake- buy new better pads, heat cycle, good as new.
