Rounded Lobe

im about to install cams on a new head i just got and i knew there was a problem with the cam so i figured since im doing cams and springs this would be a good head to start with. I get it apart and find whats pictured below. my question is what caused this to happen to this cam lobe. does it need a new rocker and lifter where the damage is? would i be better off replacing all the lifters and rocker arms? i appreciate any help guys

excuse me, i mean...
thats bad. see if something's wrong with the lifter. its quite possible its not getting oil to the location or some foreign material was lodged in there(obviously)

omg havent seen that one before. good luck

hmm i knew this wouldnt be easy. im planning on replacing the cams and springs, i guess the only smart thing to do would be to take it apart clean everything up and replace the lifters, and the roller rocker where this happened. all the other lobes are perfect

it is very odd everything in that area is bone dry. no oil on nothing. you should replace the lifter, rocker and deeply inspect everything else. there is no oil im amazed. the rocker might be clogged or just not working.

also all them shavings are inside your motor. i wonder what your bearings look like.

do an oil change ASAP and then drive the car for a day. do another oil change. send the oil out for a analysis and maybe even replace the oil cooler as shavings ''and other junk'' might be stuck in there. if it gets free your looking at a big repair bill.

also next time you know there is an issue do your self the favor and dont drive the car and get it fixed. if you knew there was an issue and you let it prolong then well here is your outcome. good lock.

i should have been more clear in the OP, i just bought this head it has never been installed on my car. so nothing from this block is in my motor. i figured the other motor may had some oil starvation that caused this. the valves should be okay though right

Yep---oil starved on that lobe. replace at least that rocker and lifter, check all oil feed holes and clean them out with carb cleaner and a pipe cleaner if you need too. Have that head tanked if you want to be sure.. then blow air throw all holes.

is there any chance the journals may be screwed from this type of incident? id hate to have ended up buying a junk head. should i get the journals checked by a machine shop?

Hopefully it didnt cost you that much

Head probably came off an engine that was motored with a fallen tappet or something wedged in there

only cost my $150 and i knew about the problem so too me it i got a damn good deal. im purchasing 2 rollers (another one doesnt spin as smoothly as i think i think it should) and one lifter and installing my cams and springs. i pulled the lifter out on the problem area today to see that the metal around the top of the lower piece was bent off and it doesnt move at all. ill post pics of it all later

Dude, Dan said it. That engine has no oil in it. Take a few of the cam caps off to make sure that they aren't damaged. (they are)

Did you take them off and look underneath? I'm certain because the cam lobe is damaged from oil starvation.

getting cam caps redone and installing these parts

more pics

nasty dead lifter

journals/cam caps will have to be refinished

i plan on rebuilding the head with

Fidanza Adjustable Cam Gears
Brian Crower 272/272 Cams
OEM Lifters
OEM Rockers
Topline Valve Stem Seals
Brian Crower Valve Springs & Retainers
if i decide to port & polish i may get some larger valves but i have yet to decide
