I'm currently using Mobil 1 0w-40. Great in cold starts and holds up well in high heat... only $7/qt @ AutoZone.

Mobil 1 ...Factory recommends Mobil 1 10w-30, but if you are in EXTREME cold you could go with a 5W - 30....For Mass. I would just stick with Mobil 1 10w-30 (like the factory recommends).

There's nothing wrong with using a 0w instead of a 5w or a 10w... especially in New England. The only "downside" is its more expensive.

And a 30 weight really isn't thick enough IMHO... a few winters ago I had 5w-30 in my car and I was stuck in traffic for 2 hours due to a blizzard... the oil started to break down and my oil pressure warning light was coming on due to overheating oil. Ever since then I will never use 30 weight again.

And 0w is much easier on the engine in cold starts, so if you're willing to spend a couple bucks more, go for the 0w-40.

The OP also asked about what oil for a built motor... When you build a motor it typically has wider clearances than the stock block, which calls for a thicker oil. He could probably use up to a 50 weight without issues, but a 40 weight is perfectly fine

Excellent catch (I am afraid I missed that...)...

To the OP -- You may want to contact your builder to determine what weight oil he/she recommends....I agree with Recompile that most built motors would do fine on a 40 or 50....
