Wastegate Actuator Arm Came off

While out driving today my EVO stopped boosting. After pulling over to check things out I noticed that the actuator arm on the wastegate had come undone where it is attached to hotside. Not sure how that could have worked itself off of there. Has anyone else ever had this happen? I re-attached the arm but still can't boost past 5 psi, I think I just need to screw down the nut on the actuator arm a lot more. Hopefully the wastegate itself is not broken? Also hope that this isn't very abnormal. The wastegate and turbo setup has been running fine for almost a year now. Thanks for the help.

No that was the weird part. It was still in place. The nut has detached from the arm though. I don't see how it could have come off????

Are you sure the WGA didn't break inside the nut?

And yes, under normal circumstances, you need to preload the actuator. Line up the arm so it slides onto the flapper easily, and then remove the arm and tighten it three full turns or six half turns. You'll then have to pull the arm to get it to attach to the flapper.

Ok, thanks very much. The number of turns was exactly what I was looking for. It did not look broken but I will double check because that seems like the only way it could have happened. Thanks again.

Well got the problem fixed this morning. It was a little tight trying to get the arm back on there with the pre-load but its on and the car is boosting normal again. Still puzzled as to how it came off as nothing was broken off in the nut but at least its fixed.

I had this happen on my 92 Stealth RT TT recently but that was because the cotter pin rusted and broke off...highly doubt that's what happened in your case!

I'm still puzzled, if the pin was intact and the arm came off at the threads? Maybe the threads are stripped?
