Swapping gears in the transmission question

Hey there everyone!

As my synchros are pretty bad as it is, I'm going to pull the transmission apart. Now since I have an VIII gearbox at my disposal, I was thinking of getting the Evo VIII 3rd 4th and 5th in there while I'm at it.

Now the questions that I don't know the answer to is - do the gears fit and you just put it together or is there other stuff that I don't know about.

The mechanic that's going to be doing the work said if it fits, he can do it without a problem but I wouldn't like to pull the tranny apart to find out that there's other stuff that needs replacing.

So if anyone would chip in that has some experience with doing this. I know that shep and TRE etc. do this stuff but USA is a bit far from me, especially for shipping a transmission.

Thanks in advance!

The gears fit but you'll need to replace all your sychros and sliders. Just remember the syncro sleeve (slider) has to be installed in a particular way or you will ruin the spring. They have alignment markings that must match up.

As I said, I'll leave the install to a trained professional. I just wanna make sure if I bring him an VIII tranny to go with, he can put those gears in

That should be a no brainer job for a pro. Backyard mechanics have been doing it for years.

frontyard mechanics are those that been working on cars for years but no license
you should be good, make sure it lines up correctly and RIGHT fluid USED!, i had a friend had a death whine after 500 miles, and it was a built SHEP with wrong fluid used

Death whine is related to transfer case 99,9% of the time. I was asking a technical question is there any other work needed other than replacing gear and aligning them.

And for your info in Europe, the spec for Mitsubishi Evo (8&9, didn't check up on the X yet) cars is following:
Engine: Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10w-60
Transmission: Castrol TAF-X
Transfer case and rear dif: Castrol SAF-XJ

I'd guess you've not heard of them before (the 2nd and 3rd) but for example Diaqueen is a nonexistant product in EU except UK and because it's oil - you can't ship it by mail.

Thanks a lot for your concern about fluids and cheers to your friend who killed a shep tranny (though I'm guessing you were talking about the transfercase anyway) in 500 miles.

Thanks for the info Jess Jeske!
