BBK Advice

As the title states, I'm wondering which version to get. My car is set up for autocrossing and only autocrossing. I don't care about being the fastest on the highway or anything like that. I'm pretty happy with my current setup but want a little more. I want one of the BBK's, not the green, red or tomei. I have my own reasons for that, so please don't suggest any of the others. I'm looking for input from people with experience with both versions. I'm interested in spool first off, mid range second, and top end third- although, I don't want a car that falls flat after 5.5 or 6K. If there are any other auto crossers out there that want to put in some input on other turbos- please tell me why you made that choice. Mind you, I'm on street tires and I'm already able to spin all 4 in second at full throttle. Thank you for your time and input.

What's the spool RPM on the full? Stockish? I'm leaning towards the full, but I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the lite version.

+1 on this ^

I would pm chad and call the shop to see what he has to say.

He would point you in the right direction based on what you are looking for.

Good luck.

I think the term 'spool' gets tossed around too much; I have the BBK Full and once you've eclipsed the boost threshold (the rpm at which the turbo will actually make boost quickly once you step on the gas), the BBK Full spools like a stock turbo. Step on it and it is there right now. Since you autoX, you may also be concerned with the actual boost threshold. On my VIII I'm seeing roughly 300-400rpm of lag over the stock turbo. I've also run the IX turbo on my VIII and it behaved very similar to the stock 10.5 VIII turbo. Specifically, I saw 25psi by 3400 on the VIII turbo and 3800rpm on the BBK Full.

I see you drive an IX, do you have cams yet? Cam selection on an IX can help improve boost threshold dramatically. I have some friends with FP4R's that see 25psi on their stock turbos by 3100rpms, so if they drive my VIII it feels 'laggy' to them since the boost threshold is higher. Once they've eclipsed the boost threshold, the complaints seem to quietly end

Anyways, the lite is a great option for autoX'ers too, since the boost threshold should be very similar to stock and you will see extra power up top. As far as holding power way up top, I cannot speak to the lite, but on my BBK full I have been nothing but impressed. On my alky/IX turbo setup I'd see peak power at 6200rpms and it would drop off pretty hard by 7500. BBK Full will hold 24psi flat from 3800-8000 on my pump gas tune and if I have the alky on 29psi tapering to ~24psi @8000 (on the street I've seen 26psi @ 8000). Power up top is there all the time, especially on high boost.

Anyways, CBRD is probably the best experience I've ever had buying something like this, I have been absolutely floored by their outstanding service and the product they've produced.

Here's my dyno results:

Have fun with your purchase
