Question dual wastegates?

when is it, if ever, and why is it necessary for two wastegates on some turbo systems?

just curious.

same question goes for BOVs.

Twin wastegates are used for twin scroll (divided housing) turbo systems. 2 cylinders for each wastegate keep the exhaust pulses separate and theoretically spool the turbo faster.

This car is not twin scroll and has 2 wastegates. He explains in post 78 that it helped to eliminate some boost creep.

If you have a single gate that is maxed out with respect to the amount of exhaust gas that it can vent, then you have to start to open it sooner to control boost. The sooner the gate opens, the slower your turbo will spool. The addition of a second gate allows you to keep the gates closed on their seats considerably longer. So, you can "tune" a dual-gated system to spoolup your turbo faster.

If you're running 2 gates on a single scroll, that means you're running too little boost on too much turbo IMO.

Iīve had a single scroll, internally gated turbo that we could wire the integral gate wide open and the turbo could not be kept under 25 PSI. Of course, it was not a stock internals turbo. It was a huge H2 wheel stuffed into a fully cut TO4E .63 A/R housing.

A single(remote)DeltaGate couldnīt control boost either. So, we had to run the interrnal gate with the DeltaGate as a backup. The Delta was set to open one PSI after the internal gate.

This particular Frankenstein was an aftermarket Buick bolt on turbo designed by the late NHRA dragbike champ, John Myers. The turbo would put out about the same peak power as a TE-49 but due to the larger turbine wheel it was a bear to control boost on.

From a zero boost roll-on, with a 5 foot walkout, it would give 25 PSI by the time you crossed a 4 lane intersection.

Sorry for the non-Evo O.T. But, yeah, dsevo, normally if you canīt control boost with the integral gate on a stock, factory spec, single scroll turbo, then something is probably way wrong.
