yeah, I found that out today looking at a diagram. Kind of discouraging that the service writer didn't call me on that one... Though I guess he's not a mechanic either...

Here are the pictures of my broken clutch plate. ACT HDSS

Can double clutching on most downshifts cause this? Like I said before, I've never launched it and I don't slip it. The only time I step on the gas hard is after the clutch is fully engaged.

I would expect double clutching to be a little harder on the clutch but easier on the synchros. Is it not a good idea to double clutch on downshifts?

Thoughts?

Dam, I have the same clutch installed about 2 months ago. Maybe a freak production error? Anyhow, the clutch is cheaper to fix than the synchros...

Sorry to say, I'm glad I went with the Exedy instead.
At least no one was hurt.

The shop who installed this clutch for me said they've installed 70+ of them and this is the first which has come back.

I think this was just bad luck...

That was my thought so I figured I would make it a habit to double clutch as much as possible.

Not sure if this is the cause. Would like to hear other opinions though...

I wouldn't write off ACT so quickly. I'm sure there are many who have had problems with their Exedy clutches as well.

Given that this is the first clutch the shop has had come back out of 70+ of this model I think that's a pretty good record.

I got my car back!

I wanted to thank the guys down at Speed Element in Fremont, California. They're located in the san francisco bay area closer to San Jose.

I highly recommend getting work done with these guys. If something goes wrong they will work with you and the manufacturer as much as they can. If the problem is due to an install they want to take care of it. If it's a manufacturer defect, they want to help you work with the manufacturer... Great shop!

The day my clutch failed I called the guys down at SpeedElement and within hours they drove their tow truck 40+ miles to come pick up my car from the mitsubishi dealer and take it back to their shop. Which is where I had the clutch installed in the first place...

Mitsubishi offered to put the OEM clutch and flywheel back in it for $1,100. No Thanks.

As it turns out, ACT warrantied the clutch because it was obviously not beat on and was obviously a manufacturers defect. Conforming to the standard with manufacturers warranties, ACT did not cover any of the labor costs for ripping out the clutch and to install the new one. Though the guys down at Speed Element took care of me and only charged me 1/2 for the job.

In the end I got away with only a $300 hit to the pocket book when I had expected it to be double or triple that.

Thanks Guys: http://speedelement.com/

Oh, and I was wrong on the 70+ ACT clutched which they've installed. It was more like 170-200+ and this is the first warrantied. While he has had multiple Exedy clutches be warrantied.
