ran 12.6 @ 112 --- broke the car

The track was super sticky tonight, and launching the car the second time (the first I bogged it on a 5k fast slip) I got a lot of wheel hop and heard approx. 3-4 rapid succession loud "pops" from under the car.

I pushed it through, and then in 3rd gear my EGT's shot up to 900C so I backed off some and ran it to a 12.6 @ 112mph. The car died at the end of the track - come to find out the BOV shot off of the AEM intake in 3rd gear (piece of crap by the way, the lip is not bead rolled so it doesn't matter how tight you clamp it down - it WILL slide its way off eventually).

Coming back from the run, I eventually downshifted into 1st and with the clutch still pushed in, I heard a really obnoxious loud whine. Anytime I decelerate the car, either with the clutch in or out, and in first gear - it whines badly. Every other gear is fine.

Tried to see if I had any bindng taking place driving forward and turning shaply - and nothing. it was solid and turning wonderfully, so I thought the xfer case was okay. Just an obnoxious decel whine. Then I tried turning in reverse - *POP*, there it was. serious bind and popping.

So, tonight I find myself in a dark place - wondering why I didn't buy the sonic blue '03 Cobra if I really wanted to drag race. Half shafts are cheaper than transfer cases and tranny's anyways

I guess I'm going to take it to Mitsu and see how badly they can commit borderline felonious acts of financial penetration. If anyone has sage advice, a good line on replacement parts, a cousin who wants to trade his stock Evo for a well modded one, or if you just want to call me obscene names - anything would be appreciated.

Jesus Christ man, lay off. It's his car and he can do what he wants with the car. It seems like when Big Al posts something about drag racing every1 is always happy or something.

New diff retails for about 2100 and you can get it for 1900 if you haggle. Install should be about 350.

I say drag race your evo all you want - BUT launch and shift smoothly !

BTW - what kind of clutch do you have? Thanks

Wow...sorry to hear about the car AvatarOfWar. That just plain sucks. You have put a lot of time and effort into the car, hopefully you can get things straightened out without it costing a fortune.

Let us know what you find out, broken Evo's concern every owner. Good luck on this one and hope things work out ok.

That sucks because you seem super cool. I think the 03 Cobra is right, that is a drag car but the evo is fun you are just way past everyone. I did the same thing with my TT Rx-7 and broke the Power Plant frame, then after that a "Tuner" made a stronger part You have to pay if you are going to play that's all there is too it. 2100.00 is really not bad to replace that. Let us know how it turns out.

I agree, and I'm all for paying for quality - but $2100 for a replacement stock weak part doesn't sit well with me. I wish there was some fantastic aftermaket front diff available that I could dump $3k in and feel confident I wouldn't break it again. Now I'm spending turbo upgrade money on weak *** parts

i know you might don't care but here is what i think,

i truly beleive that the EVO or any other 4wd cars for that matters are not the best choice for drag racing. sure it is fun and they make great power but this was not what they were built for and by design they are not up to par for this task. you have done a great job on your car and i am truly sorry that this has happend to you. my best advice to you would be to fix your car and enjoy it for what it was built for, fast turns and super fun handling. if you really enjoy drag racing (i can see why, i did it a few times and i had a blast), sell some of your mods and buy a cheap rear wheel drive american muscle car and dump 2k-3k into it and enjoy the ride.
just to make sure, this post is not a flame or anything like that. i truly am sorry to hear about your mishap and if you need anything please let me know (i can get you anything you want for your car at a great price).

FYI,

for that price i can get you a super nice cusco diff but i think that even that might break under the condition of drag racing.

No, when I put the Exedy in - I'm using the stock clutch line and restrictor.

You could always just take it easy until someone makes a fix for it. You can be sure you are not the only going to have this problem.
