WOT shifting, what does it take?
Gents, I've done some searching and I really haven't found the answers I'm looking for, so I'm posting a thread.
Coming from the world of SRT-4's, where WOT shifting is standard operating procedure, I'm wondering what kinds of options are available for the Evo and what it takes to make this a safe/reliable practice.
With my SRT-4 I have a Boost Hold feature that's part of the Mopar Stage 3 ECU, it basically keeps the BOV closed and opens the wastegate if you depress the clutch while keeping the throttle matted. There's another little piece of $130 hardware they call the WOT Box that you can install that can be programmed to interrupt ignition for a programmable delay of 25-750ms, to preserve the transmission from the extended abuse. What it does is it cuts ignition for the assigned delay as soon as the clutch switch sends a signal to the box (and assuming you are holding WOT).
So what are the options for the Evo for holding boost between gears and WOT shifting safely?
1) What options are there for holding boost during the shift
2) What options are there for interrupting the timing during the shift
3) How durable is the 5-speed Evo tranny for this kind of abuse? If something's likely to go from this, what would that be?

lol...reminds me of my old srt... i broke 2 gear selectors and a input shaft doing WOT....i say just stay away from doin WOT, less stress on your tranny, yes theirs a tune to do it...but i wouldnt do it to my car, since i can shift fast anyways shifting regular
you can either
a. shift wot without any interruption or any "tune" and if you do it quick enough, the rpms will only jump a little bit and it'll be a very quick shift, but this is the most risky way.
b. get the nlts ( no lift to shift) tephra mod where it cuts ignition when you depress the clutch when you're going a certain tps(that you adjust) and it's less abusive.

Tephra mod? I'll look into that.
I emailed the guys that make the WOT Box and they said it actually would work on an Evo 9, I might just go that route.
Here's a link to the WOT Box.

I might go for a WOT Box for the Evo now that I found out they work for the Evo.

But why would it break if you have something to interrupt timing, like the WOT Box? What's going to fail first in the Evo tranny?
screw the wot box, just patch your ecu with the tephra mod and you get the nlts mod and it cuts ignition, the same thing as wot box but without any wiring or whatever you gotta do to make that "box" work.
Ok thx, that's the info I was interested in. The synchros would be very well protected with an ignition interrupt feature, I surely don't intend to WOT shift the Evo without something installed. If they do go I'd plan to get the next set cryo treated in the rebuild.
Thanks man!
Is it pretty well accepted that the synchros are the first thing to fail from aggressive shifting in an Evo 5-speed?
Keep your stock ECU and just patch it with Tephra's new patch. Using NLTS will help a bit. The biggest factor to extending the stock trannys life is good driving and a twin disk. The key to synchro longivity is less stress on the which can be accomplished by a twin disk clutch.
^+1 NLTS will def help and then also anti-lag with an AEM EMS! That is a decent setup! I agree on the synchro problems but no car will last in the long run under conditions like that. Its reality!
