Head cleaning

Ok so im trying to get my head cleaned up a little bit cause I dont have money to send to the machine shop or anything because the economy sucks and work is slow.

Two options...

Power wash and then hand clean

or

Hand clean with carb cleaner and whatever else

Right now the valve guides and seals are still on the head and I want to avoid removing at all costs so im not sure if power washing is an option.

Let me know what you guys would advise.

get some gas or a small amount of diesel and a small paint brush, use that to clean, brush all the areas and then a light hose down, and compress air dry after

I think power washing it is a little excessive, Go to home depot and look for Purple power I think it's called..what ever it is, it is in a purple container and in the auto section and has a pic of a timing chain on it. And get a spray bottle.

Be for warned! This is some real nasty stuff as a concentrate! WEAR GLOVES! I have seen someone actually have to go to the hospital from this stuff eating their skin...but, it works great for cleaning heads or anything with oil and grease! We use it on occasion when the heads are real brown and can't get it to come up. DO NOT let it sit on the head for more then 1min. It WILL stain the aluminum if you do.

I am sure it is not good for valve seals, as it is caustic. But your head is apart, so the money you just saved doing all this yourself, you can do it right andh spend it on $35 valve seals. And it would probably be no more then $40 to have a machine shop clean it up for you if your doing assembly and dis assembly.

Ok. Ya i'll have to get some more quotes because like I said money is a huge issue other wise I'd just send it to them and call it a day.

Valve seals need to be pressed on?

Thanks for the input!

blkmkIII if I had the money I would, my local shop told me 417 plus tax an i dont even think they were going to mill it, plus that was me doing the dis assembly.

we are actually running a EVOm special, if you look into the vendor announcements you can take a peak(pics of the process)... includes free shipping to here. We would be a little more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

it's totally rebuilding the head, cleaning, flow bench proven valve job that increases CFM, milling and assembly(includes new valve seals) and we ship you a box, and pay shipping here.

If I had the money and my car payments weren't due tomorrow believe me, this would have been what I would have done. Had I worked the last two weeks I would have gotten it P&P.

we are all in a tight spot brother...your certainly not alone. But, don't let not having money to send it somewhere or it sitting for a extra week stop you from doing right on a budget. I think you could do it for under $60 yourself with some work.

You need a bench grinder with a wire wheel for the valves, get them nice and clean. Make sure the bristles are not to course.

Use that purple stuff I mentioned to get all the oil and big stuff off

Get some scotchbrite pads, green perferably. Put some gloves on and use some foaming cleaner and scrub the head good. When you clean the deck, just make sure you do it in nice even strokes across the entire surface..don't concentrate on one spot for long.

Wash it with water and dry it with compressed air, or even the blowing side of a vacuum cleaner.

get some lapping compound and lap the valves in..make sure they have a nice visible line around the whole seat and clean the head again

and assemble...and don't skimp out on valve seals! What you can't afford is to do this twice.
